The SS Edmund Fitzgerald
November 10 1975
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was once the largest ship to sail across North America's Great Lakes.
For 17 years, the "workhorse" freight ship would set and break its own records at sea.
Until one day, it set sail and never returned.
On November 10, 1975, the ship embarked on her ill-fated final voyage from Wisconsin, with a total of 29 crew onboard
Experts believe that a huge, dangerous storm that swept across Lake Superior, with near hurricane-force winds and waves up to 11 metres high, was the reason for the Fitzgerald's demise.
But, the exact cause of the shipwreck has never been officially pinpointed nor one single body was ever found, despite the wreckage being discovered just days after she sank.
Canadian balladeer, Gordon Lightfoot recorded the song "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" recalling the incident
