The Secret to Fresh Cheese: An Easy Trick to Make It Last Longer and Save You Money

Who doesn't love a good vite of cheese? It’s perfect for a quick snack or even a meal. You simply can't go wrong with this classic dairy product.

Cheese is something many of us buy regularly, which is why it’s so shocking to hear that the cost of cheese has doubled in the past few months.

And it's not surprising – the cost of grocery staples has been steadily increasing over the last few years.

With the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reporting that consumer prices have skyrocketed to their highest levels in 32 years, it’s more important than ever to save where you can when doing your weekly grocery shop.

One way to make your hard-earned dollars stretch further is to prolong the shelf life of your food. This means proper storage is a must, protecting against bacteria and other elements that could spoil your food.

Cheese, in particular, is an easy food to waste. Many of us buy it in the form of pre-packaged blocks, slices or even shredded, and next thing you know we’ve forgotten all about it - until it’s too late, and we’ve wasted money.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

TikTok user @problemsolved has great advice for making our cheese last longer – saving a few bucks in the process!

1. Block of Cheese

If you purchased a whole block, cutting it into portions that you’ll be able to use all in one go is the best way to maximise the mileage. Wrap each portion tightly with plastic wrap, place it in a resealable bag, label it, and place it in the freezer.

2. Sliced Cheese

For sliced cheeses, layer a piece of baking paper in between each slice to easily grab what you need. Similarly, store them in a resealable bag, label them, and keep them in a freezer.

3. Shredded Cheese

If it’s pre-shredded cheese, make sure it’s in a single layer without air pockets, and freeze accordingly. Alternatively, if you’re shredding cheese freshly from the block, add a light sprinkle of cornstarch to prevent clumping and help keep it cold.

Just remember that this trick works best for firmer cheeses like cheddar, jack, and even mozzarella. Meanwhile, it's best not to freeze the fresh cheeses that come with a high water content and to just use them as soon as possible.

When it comes to thawing, a smaller block should thaw overnight in the refrigerator. If packaged properly, cheese can last up to 9 months stored in the freezer.

One the things that neither Australia nor New Zealand can do is to make cheese. Cheddar, cheddar and cheddar.Mild, tast i and vintage. Or brand new, slightly older and old. Why wrap cheese in plastic? It used to be wrapped in cheese-cloth and it certainly didn't go mouldy as quickly as it does now when it is wrapped in plastic, even in a refrigerator.

We have two Tupperware cheese keepers my eagle eyed wife picked them up at the op shops they keep the cheese fresh for weeks.
