The SDC’s Top 15 Hacks
- Replies 0
Here at the SDC, we have always been committed to bringing you the best deals and most valuable content out there – be it recipes, news, random trivia, jokes, riddles, and of course, household hacks or ‘tips’.
So in a bit of a recap (or throwback, as the kids call it), we’re rounding up 15 of the most ingenious hacks that many of you folks seemed to have loved and found to be extremely helpful!
A popular clothing stain remover from ALDI actually doubles as an excellent bathroom tile cleaner.
Among the recent hacks that we have shared with you folks, this one seems to take the cake!
The hack was shared by Queenie from Sydney who swears by the Aldi product Di-San Pre-wash Stain Remover for removing stains on white garments, as well as cleaning her bathroom tiles. What a multi-tasker!
According to her, her bathroom tiler recommended the product to her family after seeing hard-to-remove stains on their bathroom floor. Much to their surprise, the $1.95 product actually worked and they have been using it ever since, calling the liquid a ‘miracle’ cleaning product.
And many of our members admitted that they are big fans of the product as well.
SDC member @Marynumbertwo said that she has been using the product for a lot of cleaning jobs around her house, such as cleaning the grout around a wood fire oven. Even her husband uses it to clean the car fabric upholstery. Aldi’s Di-San product is so good she buys two to three bottles every time so she won’t run out!
Another member shared that the product worked great in removing curry stains and Coca-Cola soft drink stains on fabric, as well. So versatile!
Another ‘miracle’ ALDI product! This time, it’s for cleaning those stubborn mould buildups.
Seems like you guys really love hearing about hacks using Aldi products!
Now that you’re done dealing with those hard-to-clean bathroom tiles, it’s time to take a look at one of the often-overlooked parts of our laundry area – the door of our washing machines. Turns out, this spot is extremely susceptible to dirt and mould buildup and if left neglected, could potentially dirty your clothes as well. Yuck!
Thankfully, a shopper shared a little-known hack for removing dirt buildup from washing machines. All you need is a roll of paper towel and the $2.59 Mould Away spray from Aldi!
The trick is to soak a paper towel in Mould Away and leave it on the mouldy parts of your washing machine. Now you don’t have to spend a lot of time scraping every little bit of mould from your front-load washing machine door. How good is that!
But if you prefer a much more natural alternative to cleaning your front loaders (or any washing machine, really), several of our members suggested simply leaving the door open after every wash! This way, the moisture left on the crevices of the machine will air-dry, preventing any mould from building up.

This hack is for those annoyingly large products in the retail store that do not include any price tags!
Everyone can agree that Kmart is a bargain heaven. No contest here!
However, one annoying thing that shoppers often experience while shopping in-store is having to bring the item to the nearest barcode scanner just to know the price of the product. What if we wanted to know the price of a heavy appliance? Or a piece of furniture?
Thankfully, one Kmart shopper shares a little-known trick that will help us save lots of time and effort when it comes to identifying the price of a large and weighty item.
Turns out, all we have to do is take a photo of the barcode and bring our smartphone over the scanner to check the price. It’s that simple, and it works!
Remember this tip on your next Kmart run, folks!

Use your pedestal fans to ‘suck’ the cooler air from outside, and into your home.
The summer season may have been slowly making its way out of Australia already, but that doesn’t mean that the temperatures are getting any cooler.
If you’re lucky enough to have air-conditioning in this weather, it is an absolute life-saver! But electricity bills are not always cheap, so most of the time, we only have our trusty pedestal fans to rely on.
However, we often find that placing them in the room and turning them up to their full speed is not always enough. The air in the room is still hot, and it’s just being pushed around by the fans.
Enter, this pedestal fan hack! Turns out, all we have to do is to place our pedestal fan near an open window or a balcony and let it ‘suck’ the cooler air from outside! Now, the cooler air is able to circulate around your room.
Though it seemed like most of the members found this hack a bit counterproductive, since most of the time, the air outside is warmer than the air inside of our rooms.
Our SDC member @Bronze suggested another practical trick: Hang a wet towel about 10cm behind the fan so that it can draw cool air that passes through the towel. Thank you for the tip, member @Bronze!

A $10 item from Bunnings is the perfect solution for getting rid of those pesky flies.
Flies are found almost bloody everywhere! And while in most cases they are just considered a nuisance instead of a major concern, swarms of flies around the house can carry viruses and bacteria that may cause diseases.
That is why we have written a story about the Envirosafe Fly Trap from Bunnings, which seemed well-received among our members. In fact, it seemed like several of you members had already been using the product for years!
It just goes to show that this is a popular and effective hack, eh?
After all, it’s so easy and simple to use. Just hang them around the areas of your house that are often visited by pesky flies. After a few days, you will notice less and less of them swarming around places where they shouldn’t be in the first place.
Some words of advice though – this item tends to stink a little so you may want to put it a good distance away from populated areas of your house. Also, as suggested by our member @Januvia1952, you may want to wear gloves when changing the trap, or else the stench will stick to your hands.

Who knew that a baking item would prove useful in making mess-free rissoles? We sure didn’t!
Many Aussies grew up with rissoles as a weekly meal. Of course, they are an absolute treat! And as delectable as they may taste, preparing these juicy lumps of mince can be quite the hassle. Especially the cleanup!
Thankfully, a mum has shared on Facebook a clever hack on making mess-free rissoles: ditch the frying pan and use muffin trays instead! The mum also claimed that doing this trick only takes half the cooking time, as compared to cooking them in a frying pan.
To make rissoles in a baking tray, simply line the insides of a muffin tray with a thin layer of oil, then place the patty-shaped rissoles into the tin slots. Then cook them on medium in the oven for about 20 minutes. Then voila! Juicy rissoles ready to be served.
Some of our members also suggested using a Pie Maker (such as this one from Kmart) for a more even cook!

Clean your BBQ grills without the stress of scrubbing.
This hack is for those annoying and hard-to-clean BBQ grills that take the fun out of any celebration! Turns out, all you need is a $9 product from Woolies.
A chef from Adelaide has revealed that she uses the Ozkleen Oven Cleaner Power Kit to clean her BBQ grills. Here’s how she does it.
While the grill is still hot or warm, she gets a lemon and scrub or uses the BBQ scrubber to get as much scraps off as she can, then she wipes it down with a wet cloth. To finish the job, she places the grill inside the plastic bag provided in the package, and lets it sit with the solution overnight. Then she rinses it with detergent and hot water.
Thanks to this hack, she no longer has to worry about those hard-to-remove bits of burnt food on her grills!

Turns out, you have been drying your clothes wrong all this time!
Now this one’s a real eye-opener.
According to a professional cleaner, it is a common misconception that using dryer sheets can help with drying your clothes faster. In reality, they actually do more harm than good to our clothes. He also added that the fabric softener in the dryer sheets is bad both for your clothes and for your dryer machine.
So instead of dryer sheets, he recommends using wool dryer balls instead.
Wool dryer balls are reusable and they help cut down drying time by creating space in the dryer to allow more surface area. They’re really good at cutting out static electricity too, and they don’t have fabric softener. Plus, they’re made from chemical-free materials so you’re guaranteed an eco-friendly product. Did we mention they reduce energy consumption (thus reducing the cost of your bills) too?

Use old bottles sitting in your cupboards as decorative pantry containers.
Are you the type of person who likes to buy a nice bottle of wine or a jar full of sauce just so you can keep the bottle afterwards? Then you’re just like us! We bet you also have a bunch of these unused empty bottles just sitting in your cupboards.
Why not turn them into decorative pantry storage jars instead?
Here in this DIY hack, a mum from Melbourne shows us how she reused her empty pasta sauce jars to make decorative bottles, which she uses to hold her snacks. All she needed was some empty see-through bottles, a rectangular sticker, and a few cans of spray paint from Bunnings.
The result is surprisingly mind-blowing!
In fact, several of our members tried this hack themselves and were satisfied with the results. One of our members, @leanneh, even suggested adding a string of LED lights inside clear bottles to have a mini decorative lamp light! And while Christmas and New Years are still a long way, we bet these lamp bottles would look great as decorations at any intimate celebration!
Three shower cleaning hacks from the home hacks queen, Carolina Mccauley!
Mum-of-two and TikTok sensation Carolina Mccauley has been featured a number of times here at the SDC for her wonderful hacks on just about anywhere in our homes!
Here, she shares with us three tips on cleaning probably one of the hardest spots in our homes – the shower!
Her first tip is to make a two-ingredient cleaning mixture that is equal parts dishwashing soap and vinegar. And if you pour this DIY mixture in a soap dispensing dish wand, you can easily scrub flat surfaces such as tiles, shower screens, and soap holders.
Her second tip is to use an indoor broom to clean the shower floor since the dense bristles and long handle can easily remove leftover residue.
And for her third tip, she introduces to us the amazing $95 Geniani Electric Spin Scrubber from Amazon.
Freeze your leftover wine so you can enjoy them later on.
Do you have a few bottles of wine sitting undone in your liquor pantry? You might want to finish them as soon as possible, because wine, once opened, won’t taste as good as new anymore.
Many of our members loved this clever trick of turning your leftover wine into usable ‘broth cubes’! Here, the wine was poured into ice cube trays, straight from the bottle, and was put in the freezer. Easy and simple!
This way, you get tiny wine cubes that could be used for cooking. The original video suggested that these cubes could be ideal to use for cooking risottos, soups, stews, and desserts.
But we also think these wine cubes could be used when you’re up for some chilled wine. This way, your glass of wine won’t be watered down by regular iced cubes and you can enjoy it for longer.

A little nifty gadget can help you tuck your bed in no time!
Making our beds is probably one of the most difficult tasks out there – it can be tedious and time-consuming, especially when you have to do it after you have just woken up! After all, no one here wants to spend their mornings endlessly tucking the sheet under the bed, right?
Thankfully, a video that has gone viral online reveals the perfect solution for our bed-tucking needs: the bed sheet tucker from Amazon.
The bed tucker — which is shaped like a paddle with a knife handle — allows you to tuck the bed sheets into the bed frame without having to lift the mattress. How convenient! Now you no longer have to worry about lifting the mattress high enough to tuck in your sheets.

A compost bin can be turned into an outdoor planter, just like in this hack.
It’s true what they say – spending more time with nature greatly improves our mental health. However, gardening materials aren’t always cheap, so if we want that dream garden project to come true, we may have to improvise.
This hack makes use of the $59 compost bins from Bunnings to make a makeshift oversized planter. So if you’re thinking of getting those pots that cost hundreds of dollars, you might want to consider this one first.
To make a giant planter with a compost bin, all you have to do is to lightly sand the bin and paint the exterior to your liking. Then use a smaller pot on the inside and fill the space around it with bubble wrap, then top with mulch.
However, one of our members, @JayKay, advised: “Polystyrene foam and bubble wrap are made of polyethylene, both of which are created through environmentally unfriendly practices. The finished products take hundreds of years to break down.”
So, we suggest opting for more eco-friendly options when it comes to filling the space inside your planter, such as unused carton boxes. Some members also suggested using packaging materials from other items.

Real butter lovers would love this little gadget – the butter bell.
This one hack, or one gadget specifically, always makes sure that we get a generous spread of soft butter for our breakfast toasts. It’s a “must-have” kitchen essential at this point, especially for real butter lovers!
A nutritionist from Brisabane revealed to us that she uses a gadget called butter bell to keep her butter at its best in terms of taste, texture, and freshness.
A butter bell (like this one from Kmart) is a two-piece kitchen gadget that kind of looks like an inverted jar. To use the kitchen gadget, you just need to fill in the bell with soft butter (hard or melted butter "never fill" the bell and will leave visible air bubbles). Then fill the crock with water to ensure that oxygen and bacteria will not get inside.
Now you have a spreadable butter that can last up to a month!
This one’s a “handy” hack to help us reach faraway papers on our desk – as shown by a pregnant Edwina Bartholomew!
And while this last hack on the list may seem a little niche, we think this could provide smiles on your faces, at least!
If you’re getting tired of reaching for faraway papers on your desk, take a look at this “handy” hack from Sunrise hosts Edwina Bartholomew and Matt Shirvington.
During their morning segment, Edwina revealed that Shirvo gave her a rather helpful gift – a $2 sticky hand toy from Kmart!
So whenever she has to reach for scripts on the farther end of her desk, all she has to do is to throw the sticky end of the toy to grab the papers and pull them towards her.
And it actually works! One mum even called it the “best pregnancy hack”, and wondered how come she didn’t know of the trick when she was carrying her baby.
