Marking a major milestone, King Charles will celebrate his 75th birthday on November 14th, 2023. For this, the palace released a special portrait taken by photographer Rankin, which showed the King with a twinkle in his eye and plenty of wrinkles – as a reminder that despite him taking the throne well beyond retirement age, he’s still determined to use his time on the throne productively.
Though a milestone birthday can usually be cause for celebration, rumours claim that something is still ‘amiss’, between King Charles and his youngest son, Prince Harry. The birthday portrait of King Charles, signifies that although the King may not be publicly addressing the rift between him and Harry, that doesn’t mean it’s not still an issue.
In fact, it was revealed that the divide between the two is still causing Charles ‘great pain’. As it turns out, the source of all the tension between father and son is the ‘anguish’ Harry caused his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in the last years of her life, coupled with the King’s displeasure at the insults Harry has directed at his wife Queen Camilla.
Unfortunately it looks like this particular issue won’t be patched up anytime soon, as King Charles will be celebrating his milestone birthday with a small dinner gathering amongst friends and very few family members. Although, as we all know, never say never.
Since taking the throne, Charles has become a master of routine, rising at 7am sharp for his daily Royal Canadian Air Force exercises—known as 5BX—followed by a breakfast of eggs, toast and honey. He then logs in and out of his work at regular, consistent times.
It's Charles’ passion for the outdoors that makes the most of his time away from the throne, though: walking, gardening and working on his farm—an activity he's been filmed talking about with immense passion—fills his free time.
Queen Camilla is also by Charles' side on many of his engagements, an understanding between them that they need their own space. The couple have separate homes, friends, and interests, in what friends consider a 'sensible and pragmatic' approach to the stresses of royal life. It's quite common to see 'his and her' cars waiting on the runway for them following a foreign tour.
But despite his simple life, Charles is still currently experiencing pain involving his younger son, Prince Harry. A rumour reached the media that there is presently 'barely any level of communication' between Charles and Harry. Although Charles hates conflict and says the door is always open for his youngest son.
Whether or not Charles and Harry will come together and reconcile remains to be seen. For now, we wish the King a most joyous birthday celebration—albeit plain and simple, as he prefers—as he embarks on another year as the leader of Britain and the Commonwealth.
