The Ice Man and his Ice Cream: Steve Waugh steals spotlight at the Australian Open
- Replies 1
On Thursday night, the 25-year-old Ash Barty completely demolished her opponent, America’s Madison Keys, with a whopping score of 6-1 and 6-3 at the Australian Open finals.
And even though Barty’s trademark slice backhand and ruthless killer instinct hooked the entire Rod Laver Arena, it was Steve Waugh and his vanilla-flavoured drumstick that made waves on social media.
And the internet has been losing it ever since.

Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh was among the bustling crowd watching the Barty vs. Keys tennis match, and from the looks of it, he seemed rather pleased with the outcome – with the way he gave a nod of approval after taking a bite from his dessert treat.
The former cricketer, who was called the Ice Man in his playing days, was famously known for coming up with the term “mental disintegration” when playing with his opponents.
Fans online have been in a frenzy ever since the cameraman panned to one of Australia’s most stone-cold athletes, being caught enjoying his ice cream in peace.
Unsurprisingly, the jokes, memes, and comparisons between Steve Waugh and the beloved 90s TV show Seinfeld came flooding in.
Here are some of the best reactions from the world of Twitter:
Even Today’s host Karl Stefanovic added to the humour of the now-viral footage, saying: “Who can blame Steve Waugh, one of our great cricket captains, for his enthusiastic demolition of an ice cream?”
“Which, unfortunately, was picked up by the cameras and has now gone viral,” he added, before bursting into laughter and saying “I kind of get it.”
Now, we don't know about you lot, but this just made us all crave a classic Aussie drumstick! Peters, anyone?
