Big changes are on the horizon for one European royal, and her next chapter might surprise you.
A major move, a prestigious university, and a new life far from home—this development marks a bold step toward independence.
But it also comes amid a backdrop of controversy that continues to cast a shadow over her family.
A European royal was preparing to begin a new life on the other side of the world, marking a fresh start both academically and personally.
Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway announced she would relocate to Sydney in August to undertake a three-year undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney.
According to the Norwegian Palace: ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra will begin her studies at the University of Sydney in August, enrolling in a Bachelor of Arts program.’
‘She has chosen a three-year degree with a focus on international relations and political economy.’
‘The Princess will be studying full-time and reside in a student residence on campus.’
‘Her Royal Highness looks forward to dedicating herself to her studies in the years to come.’
The move followed a challenging period for the Norwegian royals, with Ingrid’s step-brother, Marius Borg Høiby, facing multiple sexual assault allegations.
Borg Høiby, 28, who is Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, was first arrested on 4 August 2024 and has been charged with a number of offences including two rapes, which he denied.
He remained under investigation for three additional sexual assault allegations, as well as charges for breaching restraining orders, tampering with evidence, reckless conduct, threats, damage, and bodily harm.
Norwegian media outlet reported that he had also been accused of two rapes without intercourse, and of abusing three women.
He had previously pleaded guilty to charges including reckless conduct, damage, threats, bodily harm, and making a death threat—but denied all other allegations.
In March, following a new accusation of rape, his defence lawyer responded: ‘I have no knowledge of this and therefore have no comments to give.’
Borg Høiby, who stepped away from public royal duties at 20, did not hold a royal title nor any claim to the throne.
Princess Ingrid, aged 21, remained second in the line of succession after her father, Crown Prince Haakon.
Before deciding to study abroad, Ingrid completed military training with the Engineer Battalion in Brigade Nord, starting in January the previous year.
In celebration of her 21st birthday on 21 January, the royal family released a collection of candid photographs capturing different sides of the young royal’s life.
One photo showed her beaming in her military uniform in front of a tank, while another captured her mid-exercise, her face painted in camouflage.
A third showed her bundled in winter gear during a snowy expedition, while another featured her smiling in a lifejacket on a boat.
The final image, which appeared to delight royal watchers the most, depicted a glammed-up Ingrid alongside her younger brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, at Princess Märtha Louise’s pre-wedding party in Geiranger.
Wearing an emerald pleated maxi dress, floral lace bolero and pink clutch, Ingrid posed with one hand on Sverre’s arm, who looked polished in a forest green velvet blazer.
The caption read: ‘The princess, who is currently serving in the Armed Forces, turns 21 years old.’
Messages of support quickly flooded in on social media, with fans calling her a ‘great and healthy role model’ and praising her as an inspiration to Norway’s youth.
Ingrid had also been seen in previous years with her family at various public events, including a 2019 football match at Skaugum stadium where she stood alongside Marius, and other family portraits showing them together in Oslo.
In another disturbing allegation, TV personality Linni Meister claimed she was informed by police that she had been sexually assaulted by Borg Høiby at a party held in a ‘castle basement’, and that a video allegedly captured the incident.
Meister reportedly had no memory of the alleged attack and only learned of it through law enforcement.
Borg Høiby had not commented publicly on the latest allegations at the time of reporting.
He had no formal role within the royal household but had grown up closely connected to the monarchy since his mother married Crown Prince Haakon when he was four.
In a previous story, insider claims emerged shedding new light on how certain royal family members dealt with recent cancer battles.
The revelations added to growing public curiosity surrounding the family’s private struggles.
