The discount programs of major supermarkets and how you can maximise them

It's been a tough year financially for many families, with the cost of living rising steadily. But, as we reported yesterday, one supermarket is doing its best to help out by introducing a $1 or less initiative on some staple items.

Coles will be offering essential grocery items, such as pasta, tuna and canned tomatoes, for no more than a dollar. The initiative will run until June 28, so people will have plenty of time to bag the bargains.

Aside from the reduced prices, Coles is also offering a special treat for those who are registered for its Flybuys membership.

Flybuys members will be able to earn triple the amount of points when they purchase items from the Coles home brand.

That's right, if you are registered for the exclusive membership, you'll now be able to earn 3 points for every $1 spent on Coles home brand products!

This is a great way to boost your points balance and save on your grocery shopping.

Flybuys members can save their points or redeem them at the checkout, and they can also be used as currency to purchase travel, entertainment, technology and gift cards.

So make sure you take advantage of this great offer and start collecting those points!

If you’re looking to maximise the benefits of your supermarket loyalty membership, we have some useful tips for you!

IT expert and savvy shopper Lee Ward shared some of her strategies for getting the most out of your loyalty memberships, emphasising that you should be on the lookout for the algorithm of the programs.

Maximising the benefits of your supermarket loyalty membership can be a bit of a game.

But it’s one that’s definitely worth playing if you want to make the most of your points and save money on your groceries.

Here are some of Ms Ward’s top tips:

1. Look for offers that give you the most points for the least spend. This is where doing your research pays off. Check your supermarket’s website or app to see what offers are available before you do your weekly shop.

2. Take advantage of offers that overlap. If you have two offers that are both current, see if you can combine them to get even more points.

3. Don’t go over your limit. Many offers have a spending limit, so make sure you don’t go over this. If you need to, you can pay for part of your shop on your loyalty card and part in cash.

4. Play hard to get. If you stick to your limit or don’t use your card for a while, the algorithm may lower your limit and make a better offer.

5. Shop around. If you don’t have a good offer at one supermarket, see if the other supermarket has a better offer. You may also want to delay buying non-essentials until next week.

6. Look for bonus products. Supermarkets often have bonus offers on products, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for these.

7. Don’t shop just for the sake of it. Only buy what you need and will use. Otherwise, you’ll end up wasting money and points.

8. Use your points wisely. The best value for your points is usually to redeem them on groceries. However, you may also want to check the offers in the online shop.

9. Scan your loyalty card at other stores. Many supermarkets now have partnerships with other stores, so you can earn points when you shop at these stores too.

Great tips thanks. But, no mention that woolies loyalty ànd can be used at BWS.

Before I start my online shopping I check which items are up for "boost" points and if possible add them to my shopping list. So far this year I have accumulated $50 worth of points, these I will keep adding to till Christmas so that hopefully Christmas will be catered for free.:)

I am a member of Everyday Rewards Program and have been for 12 months or more, but I never seem to get alI I have been promised. I have $10 shown as my 'Rewards" yet I spend over $300 fortnight, but my "Rewards" never go up! I think it is a rip-off. I read how everyone get this amount or that saving but not me - even though I follow the same recourse to qualify for a "reward" as they do. I frequently query this at my local supermarket, but I just get a smile and I am told it will all add up - but when?
