The supplement in question, known as 'Robust Extreme' capsules, is marketed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.
However, the TGA's recent safety alert has raised serious concerns about the product's safety and legality.
‘We have tested a product labelled Robust Extreme capsules and found that the capsules contain the undeclared substance o-propyl vardenafil, an analogue of vardenafil,’ the TGA said.
‘Vardenafil taken in combination with other medications can cause serious side effects.’
Vardenafil is a medication that should only be taken under medical supervision, as it can interact with other medications, particularly nitrates, which are commonly prescribed to individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease.
When combined, these substances can cause blood pressure to plummet to dangerous levels, posing a significant health risk.
In Australia, vardenafil is a prescription-only medication, and the sale of products containing this drug without proper declaration is illegal.
'Robust Extreme' capsules have not undergone the rigorous assessment for quality, safety, or efficacy required by Australian law.
This lack of oversight means consumers have no guarantee of what they're ingesting or the potential consequences.
In response to this health threat, the TGA is collaborating with the Australian Border Force (ABF) to intercept shipments of 'Robust Extreme' capsules and prevent their distribution within Australia.
The TGA advised consumers to cease taking the capsules immediately and to consult a doctor if they have any health concerns or if they suspect they've experienced adverse effects.
‘If you suspect you have had a side effect (also known as an adverse event) to this product, please report it to us,’ the TGA said.
