Text Message Scam

I’ve received countless text messages informing me that my package is ready for collection or can’t be delivered because more details are required. There’s a link to click on which apparently takes you to a place where you can supply the required details. Every phone number has been different. If you open the link, apparently the scammers can hack into your phone.

As I’m one of those increasingly rare people who’s never ordered anything online, I knew it was a scam, so I deleted the text and blocked the number. I’d advise everyone else to do the same.

Yes, I have been getting heaps too, and was aware they were a scam. I do order things on line, however they are usually through Aust Post which has it’s own tracking system or by courier, and the message the scammers send doesn’t make sense when you relate them back to your known delivery systems. But people are conned by it. My 87 year old Mum asked me only yesterday, if I could look into the package received messages she was getting on her phone, but she hadn’t ordered anything.

What I would like to know is how do they get your phone number? I have had my number for many years, but Mum only got a new number 10 weeks ago, and she isn’t on Facebook or any other social or blog sites.
