Terrifying home invasion: Brutal attack leaves 87-year-old sore and bruised

It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare – waking up in the middle of the night to find intruders in your home.

But for an elderly man, this was his reality when he awoke to find intruders snooping inside his home.

Before we get into the details of the case, we’d like to preface this by saying that Jerome Gerovich, the 87-year-old victim from Mandurah, Western Australia, is doing fine and is in stable condition.

This comes after it was revealed that Mr Gerovich sustained minor injuries after being assaulted by home intruders while inside his Dudley Park home.

According to reports, the burglars were allegedly ransacking various rooms between 2 am and 3 am.

After getting out of bed to investigate, Mr Gerovich received a blow to the back of his head, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness. It is understood that at this point, the intruders continued to ransack his home of 23 years.

Once he regained consciousness, he immediately called the police and was taken to the hospital.

His neighbours rallied to offer support during his recovery.

At the time of the incident, Mr Gerovich’s family thanked members of the community for gathering security camera footage, bringing food to Mr Gerovich, and mowing his lawn for him.

Detective First Class Constable Matthew Mackay said police were treating the aggravated burglary with the ‘utmost seriousness’.

In a statement, he explained: ‘This is definitely a serious and horrible offence that occurred against an elderly and vulnerable member of our community.’

‘We've allocated significant resources throughout the district in the form of forensic officers. We have multiple units that are out there doing everything we can to apprehend these offenders,’ He added.

Neighbours revealed that Mr Gerovich is a ‘great guy’ and someone ‘dear’ to many.

‘He helps take everyone's paper in for him if they're not home,’ one of Mr Gerovich’s neighbours said.

‘He is a really nice man, and it's very sad,’ another shared.

Others expressed their shock over the incident.

‘It was on our street? It doesn’t happen here. It’s surprising,’ one resident told reporters.

Nevertheless, the local community worked with the police in the investigation.

Security cameras from nearby houses caught the offenders peering into a neighbour’s car and a letterbox before they entered the victim’s home.

In the wake of the home invasion investigation, Mr Gerovich’s relatives remained at his side to ensure his recovery went smoothly.

According to his loved ones, Mr Gerovich described himself as feeling ‘sore and shaken up’ but is ‘recovering well’.

‘He’s surrounded by family, providing him with support,’ they said.

The police investigation resulted in the arrest of five people, with two of them charged over the alleged attack.

A 13-year-old boy from Greenfields and a 19-year-old man from South Hedland have each been charged with aggravated home burglary, aggravated grievous bodily harm, and aggravated robbery.

The 13-year-old remained in custody, where police have confirmed that he had been previously charged with similar offences. Both of them were ‘known to the police’.

Detective Matthew Mackay said that the community played a significant role in apprehending the perpetrators.

‘This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and will not be accepted against these vulnerable members of our community. This was an innocent 87-year-old man. He could have been anyone’s grandfather, who was asleep in his own home and woke up to be violently assaulted and left in a hospital while his personal belongings were stolen,’ the detective shared in an impact statement.

‘This is shocking. This is horrible.’

Three of the suspects – two more 13-year-old boys and another 19-year-old man – were taken into custody as part of the investigation.

Mr Gerovich, on the other hand, had spoken to Detective Mackay following the arrest of the suspects. Mr Gerovich told the detective that he was feeling ‘a little bit embarrassed’ about the attention he received from the community but remained ‘overwhelmingly grateful’ for the support.

Youth is out of control……..too much idle time on their hands 😳😳
Put them working in farms or boot camps, where they can learn how hard, life is.
Sending them to prison doesn’t do anything good. They’ll probably learn more ways of doing bad, will have everything to entertain them and treated with everything they would like to.
I honestly believe that behind these kids, there are adults grooming them to the kind of actions they practice.

The point is that, as per the usual these thugs will be let go with a small pat on the beack of the hand and possibly a warning only to be going out and do the same thing again and again.

When are the Politicians making these silly laws going to learn and start saying that enough is enough.??
I WONDER.!

Wishing Mr Gerovich a speedy recovery.

This, unfortunately, is not an isolated case in the Mandurah area and the main reason we moved from there.
It is such a pity as Mandurah is a beautiful seaside area about 85ks out of Perth.
Youth is so out of control these days and so many parents don't seem to care. What on earth are 13 year olds doing roaming the streets at 2am.

13 year old ... brat! Parents obviously don't care or if they do the youth is at fault.
The point is that in most of the time, if not all of the time, the parents aren't allowed to do anything to those children even if they wanted to, because the Law would come down hard on them and not the children.
These are tough times for the parents as what we used to be doing many years ago to correct our children is illegal and parents might risk getting arrested themselves.
On the other hand parents might be at fault too as they probably don't even think of keeping an eye on their children.
What were those 13 years old doing at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning without their parents knowledge.?

The World has gone mad over the last 10 years or more let me tell you. Just look at what is going around you in theses days and age with the wokes and the Political correctness, and tell me.

When you can't even sing Baa Baa Black sheep anymore but we are only allowed to say Baa Baa Rainbow sheep instead.????

My thoughts exactly, what are 13 year olds doing out at 2am? Where are the parents? I really think it is past time parents are held responsible for any damage these vandals and thugs do. I also think it is any homeowners right to defend themselves and their families, home, by whatever means necessary, without fear of prosecution, and if the perpetrators get injured or worse so be it, they are getting what they deserve.

Why are parents not teaching children from day one that there are boundaries that should not be crossed and if they do then the consequences will not be pleasant and it will remain on their record so that when they are older and may be looking for employment that could be the one thing that loses it for them. The record will be found.

Unfortunately, nowadays with all the goody two shoes, bleeding hearts and even the govt, sticking their bibs into family lives, telling you what you can and cannot do when raising your own children I am glad mine are well and truly grown up.
I wonder if they ever stop and think that the more rules and regulations they have bought in the worse our youth is getting
Youth crime is rampant and when they do get caught the legal system gives them a smack on the hand and sends them off to continue on their merry way .

Ohh the good old days when you were allowed to tell your kids what they were and what they were not allowed to do, plus a good kick in the bum if necessary or send them to bed without desert or ground them for a few days or a week.
