Terrified passengers started 'choking' when smoke filled the cabin mid-flight

We here at the Seniors Discount Club always like to encourage our members to travel as much as possible. It's a great way to explore new places, meet new people, and learn about different cultures. But we’re also aware of how stressful flying can be. Even if you're not afraid of heights, there's just something about being over 9,140 metres in the air that makes a person feel very vulnerable.

However, even though we like to think that air travel is one of the safest forms of transportation out there, things can (and do) go wrong sometimes – as one group of passengers on a flight from Goa to Hyderabad found out recently.

Travelling via plane can be a bit of a nightmare sometimes – especially if you happen to be caught up in an emergency mid-air.

Sadly, this was the reality for passengers on board SpiceJet flight SG3735 from Goa, India last week. The flight had only just taken off when smoke started pouring into the cabin from an unknown source.

In a video filmed by one of the passengers on board, a woman could be heard shouting ‘stand down’ repeatedly as beeps sounded in the smoke-filled plane.

In the dark cabin, she used a dim torch to direct her requests for those aboard to ‘bend down and stay down’. At least 86 people were reported to be on board the aircraft during the incident.

The incident happened shortly after departure, and the plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Hyderabad Airport last Wednesday.

In one clip, multiple ambulances were seen arriving at the scene despite heavy rainfall. Members of the cabin crew were spotted preparing to assist and waiting by the side of the runway with wheelchairs.

One passenger, Srikanth Mulupala, shared that the crew members told them to pray to God and pray for their families. ‘It was mortifying,’ they said.

‘Many of my co-passengers panicked and started shrieking.’ A SpiceJet spokesperson has since denied this claim.

The airline also provided a reason for the emergency mid-air. They said it was due to ‘the onboard air conditioning system’. They also commended their crew for handling the situation as per airline protocol.

However, another passenger by the name of Anil claimed that something went wrong in the bathroom. The passenger said they overheard the flight attendants speaking in hushed tones for 20-odd minutes before the smoke started appearing around them.

‘We felt like choking. However, the lights were turned on and the crew asked us not to leave our seats and stop talking,’ they shared.

Passengers were evacuated as soon as the plane made the emergency landing, and ground staff were asked to put all precautions into place to avoid further mishaps.

You can watch a summary of the incident here:

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) already restricted SpiceJet to operate at 50% capacity after the incident. Before this, the airline was already facing disciplinary action due to eight other recent aircraft-related accidents.

Scary stuff. Have never heard of that airline and suspect they are a budget offshoot of a budget airline. It's another case of you get what you pay for. I know it's not foolproof but I would only travel with reputable, well-known companies. ;)

That would have been terrifying but panicking does not solve anything. You have to trust that the crew have been trained well enough to deal with this and keep you calm. Listen to the instructions, after you have crapped yourself, and hope that fate has better things for you in mind.
