Telstra offers free credit for struggling customers to ease cost of living pressures

In today's fast-paced world, staying connected is more important than ever, especially for those who may rely on their phones to keep in touch with family, manage health appointments, or simply stay informed.

However, with the cost of living on the rise, many Australians find themselves in a tough spot when it comes to managing their bills, including their phone expenses.

Recognising this challenge, Telstra has stepped up to offer a helping hand to those in need.



In a generous move, the telecommunications giant is offering up to six months of free pre-paid credit to ease the financial burden for Australians struggling to make ends meet.

The expanded Top Up Program is now more accessible than ever, with 30,000 phone credits worth a staggering $5.4 million up for grabs.

This year, the value of the top-ups has increased from $160 to $180. The six-month prepaid recharge includes unlimited local calls and SMS for six months, as well as 70GB of data.

Initially, Telstra's program targeted individuals grappling with homelessness, domestic violence, or the aftermath of natural disasters.

However, Teresa Corbin, Telstra's chief customer advocate, has announced that the program is now open to any customer requiring financial assistance.

'We know that some Aussies are doing it tough right now,' Corbin said. 'Everyone should have the opportunity to stay connected without compromise, and we want to do more to help make it easier.'



Research commissioned by the Australian Communications and Media Authority has revealed that approximately a quarter of Australians have struggled to pay at least one essential service bill in the last 12 months, with about half of those finding it difficult to cover their telecommunications costs.

Despite the availability of financial aid, many Australians are still in the dark about these programs. Last financial year, Telstra provided 18,115 top-ups to those in need, yet around $3 million of assistance was unclaimed.

To ensure that more people can benefit from this support, Telstra has made the free top-ups available not only through charities but also directly from Telstra itself.

Organisations such as Safe Steps, Anglicare, Salvation Army, Save The Children, and Uniting Care are participating in the program, making it easier for individuals to access the help they need.



This comes after Telstra announced that it would give away 12,000 free mobile phones to eligible customers to prepare for the shutdown of the network’s 3G services.

This initiative supports those who may be disadvantaged due to age, location, financial hardship, or the aftermath of natural disasters.

My eldest daughter a single mum with 3 kids and really struggling ,recently was given a depth of housing home on top of this her community worker had arranged for her and her kids to each receive a mobile phone and prepaid calls and data all free by Optus.
Optus also gave her free WiFi internet for her home.

I was amazed at the generosity of these companies and all done quietly. Through Optus doing this kind deed they will now be keeping my home services I'm more than happy for them to receive my money.

Thank you to these companies that are helping the needy.
 
Over the last 12 months, I have struggled to keep up with the general cost of living. I recently got into difficulty with my communications and about a fortnight ago I appealed to Telstra for assistance. They were absolutely marvellous. They appointed a case manager to look after me and it did not take too long to sort out my issues which were based around an accumulation of bills and some old system issues that had been bugging me about Telstra's internal system for a number of years.
Apparently, Telstra introduced a whole new system last week that allowed their consultants to do things that were not possible in the past. I was advised that I should wait for this new system to materialise before they could do what I needed. This I did, and the charming young Lady who was my case manager fixed all my issues in a few minutes.
Well done Telstra keep up the good work.
I would say to anyone in difficulties at the moment to contact Telstra and ask for help. They are extremely forgiving and you are dealt with as a valued customer. There is no shame in it and they want to help.

And charge like wounded bulls after the 6 months and there is no way you can get out of the contract.
