As I started my annual trawl of insurance companies to try to find the best deal, one of the questions that came up was regarding whether we had a burglar alarm. There appeared to be two basic types – those that are not ‘monitored’ and those that are. I believe the former is preferred by insurance companies and that they accordingly give you a bigger discount on your premiums. I decided it would be a good idea to carry out some research into these alarms to find out the best value and to also find exactly how much of a discount one could expect.

We have had a monitored alarm system for several years. The monitoring costs are low & my husband did the wiring & most of the installation work, he used to work with the chap who ran the business back in Telstra. We have sensors throughout the house and shed as well as wired smoke detectors. It works well for us.
