Take advantage of senior discounts

Senior discounts exist for retirees just like you, and many businesses offer them. These discounts can range from a percentage off your purchase to freebies and special promotions. Make sure to always ask if a senior discount is available when making a purchase or booking a service. You can also look for senior discounts online or through senior organizations and groups.

So exactly HOW do you get these discounts? When buying something, do you say “one Senior’s gelato, please” and they give you 10% off, or do you show yr Seniors’s card when ordering and they automatically know you get discount? Do you hv to argue w young staff that you are entitled to a discount? So many young ones are belligerent towards older ppl now. If you’ve never asked for a discount before it can be intimidating.

Open your mouth and ask the question - do I get the ‘Senior’s Discount’ on this purchase? If you don’t ask, you don’t get, simple. Some people don’t look their age so the person behind the counter is not to know. I believe most states will have a physical Senior’s Card, given at the age of 60 and beyond.

In Vic, you can get a Senior's card when you turn 60 but you must be working less than 35 hrs /week. I think that is right. You can get a Senior's Business card if working more than those hours. It entitles you to the same things as a regular Senior's card.
NSW is different, (several years ago anyway) . There was no business card for them.

I would have thought all pensioners would find out about discounts I live in Tasmania I get concessions on water bills electricity car registration and don't have to pay for license renewal

There are a few businesses in the town where I live that give seniors discount, including the bakery we use. When we travelled through NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania some of the tourist venues offered seniors discounts, they always had a sign up stating same, and you just needed to show your seniors card to get it.
