Sydney restaurant hit with major fines for unsafe food practices

A popular Asian restaurant in Sydney was charged over $5000 in fines by the local council for failing to meet safe food handling practices.

Zilver at Westfield Bondi Junction was issued a total of five fines in August after the Waverley Council checked the place.

The information about the fines was shared on the NSW Food Authority's website after they were paid.

The restaurant’s major offence was for handling food ‘intended for sale in a manner that will render or is likely to render, the food unsafe’.

This single fine cost the business owners a hefty $1540.

During the same inspection, the restaurant received four more fines, each priced at $880.

Two fines were issued for not maintaining ‘the food premises to the required standard of cleanliness’ and ‘the premises, fixtures, fittings, and equipment in a good state of repair and working order having regard to their use’.

The other two were for failure ‘to ensure that persons undertaking or supervising food handling operations have skills and knowledge in food safety and food hygiene matters’ and ‘to take all necessary steps to prevent the likelihood of food being contaminated’ while handling food.

Efforts to get a comment from Zilver are underway.

How to lodge a food safety complaint in NSW

The NSW Food Authority works with councils to ensure food sold in NSW is both safe and accurately labelled.

Retail business complaints, except for those related to butchers, food allergens, or widespread food poisoning, should be directed to the local council (as each council enforces the Food Standards Code).

Too right we should.... some of the things I experienced in my time of owning a restaurant.....

I think every time we eat out or buy takeaway we are at risk of getting ill from food poisoning. Very few restaurants/takeaways would meet all the standards of hygiene required by law. I have seen so many instances of staff using unsafe food handling techniques that I am wary of eating out at all. I have noticed a lot of mostly Asian staff who don’t wash their hands after using the toilet, uncovered food with flies buzzing about, utensils and cooking surfaces that are dirty, the list goes on. It would be good if there were more frequent checks on all food places.

Ha ha ha.... you think their hygiene is questionable....you should see their hygiene back home. Things that we would consider a "no no" they take in their stride. Chicken is left out in the open at 36-40 degrees C, cooked and then left out for a day or more. Flies buzzing around.
Their resistance to disease is high.

Yikes, hearing about restaurants with unsafe practices always makes me double-check my dining choices! It's so important to prioritize food safety. Reminds me of this cozy deli I stumbled upon during a trip to New York City. The owner, inspired by his grandma's recipes, took pride in every bagel and sandwich he made. You could taste the love and care in every bite. Speaking of delis, have you heard about theborschtbelt.com? They feature modern "All Day Dining". Seems like a spot where food safety and quality are top priorities!

Doesn't affect me as I never eat out... I was in the restaurant business and what I saw would make your hair stand on end.
Our kitchen was so clean that suppliers of equipment would use our establishment as a showcase for potential buyers of equipment.
