Sydney petrol prices soar to $1.93 per litre in just a week, further hike seen

If you've recently filled up your car, you may have noticed that petrol prices have skyrocketed.
In Sydney, according to insurer NRMA, the average price for unleaded fuel across the city now stands at 193.0c ($1.93) per litre–a staggering 9.9c increase from the bottom of the cycle last week.
That doesn't sound like a jump, you might say–until you hear that prices could reach as high as the 'low 210 cents per litre' in the coming days.
The NRMA said, ‘Average regular unleaded prices rose 9.9c per litre last week from the bottom of the cycle.’
‘That should peak around the low 210s ($2.10) cents per litre over the next five to seven days.’
Premium 95 and 98 unleaded fuels could even reach as high as 227c ($2.27) and 234c ($2.34), respectively.
And as for diesel? Unfortunately, the already-expensive 203.2c ($2.03) per litre cost has increased even more–by 13c from last week.
LPG in Sydney is the only fuel type to have dropped, down by 0.3c to 98.3c across the city.
Fuel Check NSW, a state government fuel finder app, further reveals the stark reality for motorists.
According to government data, the average price for unleaded fuel has skyrocketed from the mid-180c ($1.80) per litre mark seen in July, and is actually on track to reach last November’s record high.
The gulf between the lowest and highest petrol prices this week was also quite severe, with 53.7c per litre separating the two. Prices varied across the city, but it was Ryde who saw the cheapest offering of 173.2c ($1.73) per litre.
Sadly, this sudden and dramatic petrol price spike isn't exclusive to Sydney.
In Melbourne, unleaded fuel reached as high as 229.9c per litre, according to the RACV’s fuel tracking data, and motorists told a news outfit they had 'never seen it that bad'.
One motorist even said ‘When I saw how much it was, I stopped.’
Other major cities like Brisbane, Hobart, Perth, Canberra, Adelaide and Darwin aren't faring much better–with some places worse than others.
For instance, unleaded reached an average of 200.5c ($2.01) per litre in Perth and about 198c ($1.98) per litre in Canberra. Over in Adelaide, meanwhile, it has rocketed to 208c ($2.08) per litre.
So, what’s behind these ever-increasing prices? It appears that both changes to the fuel excise and production dips have contributed to this unwelcome 'sticker shock'.
However, the NRMA has urged motorists to compare prices through fuel-checking apps and always get the best deal when shopping for petrol.
Members, it's times like these when utilising discount deals at the pumps, or opting for public transport if it's convenient, could save your wallets a lot of heartache. Even just a few cents add up if it's done regularly.
