Swimming legend Ian Thorpe arrives at Olympic trials in wheelchair

In a sight that has left many Australians concerned, the nation's swimming hero, Ian Thorpe, was recently seen in a wheelchair at the Olympic swimming trials in Brisbane.

The five-time Olympic gold medalist, affectionately known as 'Thorpedo' for his incredible speed in the water, has faced his share of challenges since retiring from competitive swimming.

But this latest development has fans sending their well-wishes and hoping for a speedy recovery.

Ian Thorpe, whose athletic prowess and down-to-earth demeanour have made him a household name, was filmed by Channel 7 navigating the venue in a wheelchair, clutching crutches.

However, the cause of Thorpe's current condition is not related to his years in the pool but rather an injury sustained while participating in a reality TV show.

Thorpe was set to appear on Celebrity Amazing Race, where he teamed up with childhood friend Christian Miranda.

‘We’re told Ian Thorpe is completely okay, but apparently, the injury was a serious and painful one,’ 7News’ Chris Reason said.

Despite the setback, the 41-year-old Thorpe has not let the injury dampen his spirits or his commitment to the sport.

He has continued to fulfil his role as a commentator for Channel 9's coverage of the Olympic trials, providing insights and sharing his passion for swimming with viewers across Australia.

Thorpe's commentary came alive as he discussed the sensational performances at the trials, highlighting the swimmers' readiness for a monumental Olympic campaign.

‘It’s been a sensational start to our Olympic selection trials, the swimmers have really been on fire,’ Thorpe said.

‘We’ve seen a number of world records go, great battles, and the competition has been fierce. It’s great, just 40 days out from the Olympics.’

Thorpe mentioned that Australia's team is ready to surpass their performance in Tokyo, which marked their most successful Olympics to date.

‘We haven’t been in this position of dominance in swimming for a very long time,’ he said.

The trials themselves were a spectacle of athletic excellence.

Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan delivered a historic 200m freestyle final, swimming the two fastest times ever recorded.

Titmus snatched the world record from O’Callaghan, who was visibly emotional despite achieving a personal best.

Nine commentator Mat Thompson and former Olympian Giaan Rooney were left in awe

‘One of the greatest races of all time, and Ariarne’s got the world record back,’ Thompson said.

‘She might be the best we’ve ever had. She’s got a chance to come back from Paris as Australia’s greatest ever swimmer.’

‘I’m speechless. I’m speechless, 0.62 off the world record that was only broken last year,’ Rooney added.

‘You can see how disappointed Mollie is, but you can see how much Ariarne Titmus wanted that world record,’ Thorpe said.
