Supermarket products to keep your tile floors CLEAN and SHINY

As silly as it might sound, the floor is one of the first things people notice when they walk into someone’s home. That’s why it’s only best that we keep our floors clean and shiny.

Over time, tile floors lose their shine due to quite a lot of abuse, such as dirt, food stains, mud, and foot traffic. And floors that have lost their shine can look rather dull and make a room feel outdated and lifeless. It’s important that they receive regular TLC to maintain their quality through the years.

However, we also understand that cleaning floors can be quite tedious, especially if there are a lot of areas to cover. Not to mention, commercial cleaning products can be quite expensive too!

But worry not, because we’re here with tips on how to give your tile floors new life and restore them to their former shiny glory – without breaking the bank, of course.

Ammonia-Water Solution

Ammonia is one of the best floor cleaners out there, long proven to be excellent in removing floor stains and restoring the shine on floor tiles.

Wear a pair of protective gloves before mixing the solution and cleaning your floors.

Simply add a few drops of ammonia into a bucket of warm water and mix well. Then, dip your mop into the solution and wring thoroughly (to avoid over-application of solution on your floors). Once the mop is wet enough, wipe the floor small sections at a time. Not only will the solution remove dirt and stains, but it will disinfect the floor as well.

In case of persistent and hard-to-remove stains, soak a sponge in the cleaning solution and use it to scrub the stains. After cleaning with the ammonia solution, rinse your floor adequately with freshwater and dry-mop.

Soapy Water

A mixture of soap and warm water can also work in cleaning your tile floors.

To make your soapy solution, just add your favourite detergent into a bucket of warm water and mix thoroughly. Once the solution is ready, dip the mop and wring appropriately before using it on the floor. Use a soft brush or a sponge to scrub the stain spots gently.

Also, remember to replace the solution when it turns dirty to avoid leaving dirt streaks on the floor. Once you’re done, rinse the floor using clean water and dry-mop.

Baking soda

One of the many uses of baking soda is to clean stains and dirt off your tile floors. Pretty versatile ingredient, right?

To make your baking soda cleaning solution, just add ¼ cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon liquid dishwashing shop and ¼ cup white vinegar in a bucket of warm water. You may also add a few drops of your favourite essential oil for that added freshness. Then, mix the solution thoroughly to form a paste.

Apply the solution on your tile floors and leave for around 10 minutes. Then, rinse it off with clean water. Repeat the process as needed then dry-mop the surface to remove excess moisture.

ALDI laundry degreaser

One of the cheap and effective floor cleaners we came across on the internet is Aldi’s laundry degreaser.

Even though it was originally meant to remove oil and grease from clothes, one mum shared that it works effectively on cleaning tile floors, stone benchtops, showers, glass, and cooktops too. And all for less than $2 a bottle!

Plenty of other people also vouched for the product, saying that not only does it work excellently, but it also smells great. “I use this on my countertops all the time,” said one person.

However, the product reviews were not all good. Some people also warned about the adverse effects of using the laundry product on tile floors.

One man advised that the laundry degreaser breaks down the floor grout, which is an important part of the flooring. Broken down floor grout could mean moisture seeping into the substrate, which could crack and destroy your tiles after some time.

To be perfectly honest I have 3 methods for cleaning my floors!! Most of my home is tile floors. So after a vacuum I use the steam cleaner ( no detergent ) or when the skirting boards and all the nooks and crannies are needing a clean I use the mop and bucket with a dash of detergent and a dash of metho in hot water to help everything dry faster. And the third method I use in the bathroom for a quick clean. I wipe the floor tiles over with a moist microfibre cloth ( no detergent ). It works for me!

I have laminated wood on my floors, I use a capful of Mineral Turps in a bucket of water with vinegar, warm water and a dash of eucalyptus
