Supermarket giant slashes prices on popular home staple for limited time

In a move sure to delight cheese lovers nationwide, Coles decided to alleviate the pressure on household budgets by significantly reducing the price of a kitchen staple: the 1-kilogram cheese block.

With the rising cost of living, finding ways to save on groceries is more important than ever, especially for the over-60 community.

The Coles Dairy Cheese | 1kg ($9.50), a staple in many Australian homes, has been generously discounted.

Originally priced at $13.90, these hefty blocks of cheesy goodness have been reduced to $9.50.

This $4.40 saving per block is not just a temporary special but a significant price reduction lasting 12 weeks starting from 31 July 2024.

This division encompasses a variety of Coles cheese blocks, including the Coles Australian Colby Cheese | 1kg ($9.50), Coles Dairy Cheese Tasty | 1kg ($9.50), and Coles Dairy Tasty Light Cheese Block | 1kg ($9.50).

These products are part of a larger initiative by Coles, which has seen over 200 products receive price cuts this winter, providing some relief during the cost-of-living crisis.

Over the past three months, Coles has also reduced the price of over 70 dairy products, including favourites like Jalna Greek yogurt, Devondale butter, and Paul's milk.

This is a significant move, considering Coles sells four million kilograms of Own Brand cheese annually.

A recent supermarket giant survey revealed that 40 per cent of Coles customers prefer to buy a block of cheese over slices (27 per cent) or shredded (25 per cent).

Anna Croft, Coles' Chief Commercial Officer, emphasised the company's dedication to helping customers save at the checkout on grocery items they buy most.

'We are absolutely committed to lowering the cost of everyday essentials for our customers and have further invested in putting another family staple in our Down Down pricing range to offer greater value for longer,' Croft said.

‘We know the humble cheese block is a family favourite and very versatile to have on hand, from sliced and diced in family lunches and grated in cheesy bakes to enjoying on its own with some crackers.’

‘This price reduction is 100 per cent funded by Coles because we know that cheese is a popular and important part of our customers' shop every week.’

‘Our Own Brand cheese comes from Australian dairy farmers with whom we work directly to ensure we can provide customers with great quality and value cheese.’

The price of Coles Own Brand 1kg Australian cheese blocks will be reduced for 12 weeks starting 31 July 2024.

In related news, a Coles customer has accused the supermarket of shrinking the size of its cheese Sandwich Slices and eliminating the individual plastic wrapping.

The customer shared a photo on social media showing a cheese slice smaller than a piece of sandwich bread and expressed dissatisfaction with the change. You can read more about it here.

I’ve always found the Coles brand cheese to have very little taste although the Colby has more taste than the Tasty.
I still buy it every now and then, when funds are even tighter than usual, and sometimes get a surprise block where the taste is quite good but that happens so inconsistently it’s ridiculous.
