Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac stirs up storm with divisive take: ‘Am I insane?’

When it comes to household debates, water bottles might not seem like a topic that could lead to a cheeky marital spat.
However, for Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac and his fiancée Rebecca 'Bec' James, this seemingly innocuous subject has stirred up a storm of controversy.
Sam Mac, known for his lighthearted take on life and weather alike, recently took to social media to share his bewilderment over the latest trend of oversized water bottles.
The trend, which has been gaining traction on social media and among fashion circles, has seen people toting around water bottles that can hold anywhere from one to a staggering five litres of water.
Upon his return home, Sam was greeted by the sight of Bec's new four-litre water bottle, a behemoth of hydration that left him both amused and perplexed.
In a video shared with his followers, he said, ‘Bec filmed me because she knew I wouldn’t cope well with this.’
Sam's reaction was one of disbelief as he jokingly lamented the absurdity of such a large drink bottle.
'Am I insane or are the sizes of drink bottles becoming absurd?' he asked his audience.
‘This is absolutely pushing it right—I’m going to be honest with you, it’s ridiculous,’ he said, picking up Bec’s other two-litre water bottle.
‘But this…’ he added as he reached for the brand new four-litre bottle.
‘If you walk around with this, and pass it off as a drink bottle... nup. We’re done. Four litres!’
‘Where are you doing your workout, which desert?’ he jokingly asked his fiancée.
‘You don’t want to borrow my drink bottle?’ Bec asked while laughing.
‘I don’t have any treks organised through the Andes this week,’ he replied.
Sam's playful dismay continued as he compared Bec's new water bottle to his own 600mL bottle, which he deemed 'normal’.
Not one to miss an opportunity for a good-natured jest, Sam even went so far as to create a mock 'water bottle' out of their garbage bin, complete with a 'label' and an oversized 'straw' made from a cardboard cylinder.
‘Got you a present,’ he told Bec.
‘It takes two people to move, but that’s ok, as long as you’re hydrated.’
‘If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,’ he jokingly said in the video.
The video, which Sam captioned with a call to action for an 'intervention' against the use of 'offensively large' drink bottles, sparked a wave of reactions from his followers.
Fitness trainer and former TV star Sam Wood agreed with Mac's stance, saying, ’Agreed, Sammy. Enough is enough. We gotta put a stop to it.’
‘I’m with you, it’s getting out of hand,’ another replied.
Meanwhile, 7NEWS Melbourne presenter Rebecca Maddern said, ‘I just like a glass [of water]. Call me old fashioned.’
‘Insane. I thought my 2L was bad. I only got it because I’m lazy and don’t refill my 1L one,’ one commenter wrote.
Despite this, others had the opposite view.
‘Noooo, large water bottles for the win!’ said one.
‘I have [a] stupidly large bottle because I’m on a fluid restriction, and it’s the only way I can stay accountable,’ another responded.

The couple, who are already parents to one-year-old Margot, announced in February that they are expecting their second child, with Sam playfully referring to the upcoming arrival as 'Baby Mac (the sequel)’.
