Sunrise host Edwina Bartholomew’s awkward on-air realisation

We can certainly relate to the feeling of hitting a brick wall of mortifying embarrassment occasionally. It usually happens to us right after we've made a socially unacceptable faux pas or said something inappropriate on accident.
Edwina Bartholomew, Sunrise’s beloved newsreader, had one of those moments on air recently.
Sunrise TV presenter Edwina Bartholomew was left red-faced on air when a story Natalie Barr, her co-host, hit a little too close to home.
Edwina and Nat were discussing a recent viral story about a father-to-be who was ‘slammed online’ after he expressed wanting to name his daughter after one of his ex-girlfriends.
Edwina jumped in after the segment and admitted something about her personal life. The star revealed that her young son, Tom, shares a name with one of her ex-boyfriends.
‘I have just realised I have an ex-boyfriend called Tom, and my son is called Tom. That's awkward,' she told co-anchor Natalie Barr.
‘No!’ Nat exclaimed before Edwina said it was ‘time to move on quickly’ from the subject.
Edwina tied the knot with fellow journalist Neil Varcoe in 2018 and shares two children with him. Molly was born in 2019, and Thomas (Tom) was born in March 2022.
Later in the show, Edwina joined David ‘Kochie’ Koch, Mark Beretta, and Nat on the Sunrise couch to elaborate on her son's naming disaster.
‘Does Neil know you had an ex called Tom?’ Kochie asked.
Edwina clarified that it was all a coincidence. She explained that her son, who just turned one, was named after her husband’s best friend. It wasn’t until the segment that she made the connection with her ex.
‘No, Tom is also [Neil’s] best mate’s name, that’s why we chose it. However, honestly when you said it…this morning, I was like, “Oh my God”, and even worse, it was the person I dated before Neil!’ The TV host shared.
‘So, what a shocker that it didn’t even cross my mind until today,’ she quickly added.
Kochie then asked Edwina if she ‘regretted’ her naming choice after her discovery.
‘It’s a bit late to change it!’ Edwina replied.
‘Tom, beautiful Tom, just turned one yesterday, so I feel like that ship has sailed.’
This comes after Edwina revealed a detail about her married life with Neil. In a column for News Corp, Ms Bartholomew explained to her readers how she and Neil live under the same roof but sleep in separate beds.
According to Edwina, this arrangement doesn’t affect the couple’s intimacy at all. She also added that this sleeping arrangement has been in place for seven years and is suited to their sleeping styles.
Although, Ms Bartholomew also pointed out she knew how this could ‘shock’ people and explained that when the couple have guests over, they get surprised at seeing two separate bedrooms.
Many of those who read her column praised her for sharing something personal.
‘You have to do whatever it is to make a relationship work, who says sleeping in the same bed is what you must do’, one wrote in the comments. While others weren’t on board with the idea of their partner sleeping in a separate bed.
