Sunrise host caught in embarrassing on-air fail – here's what happened

We all have those moments; the kind where something totally unexpected (and slightly embarrassing) happens, and your only recourse is to laugh it off and hope no one else noticed.

Unfortunately, if you happen to be on a live television show and something as cringeworthy as this happens, it’s probably going to be a little hard to hide from!

That's what this Sunrise presenter had to do when an in-studio cooking segment went awry.

Matt Doran was filling in for one of the regular hosts when he was asked by MasterChef guest Courtney Roulston to give her a hand with a new recipe.

According to the guest chef, the recipe, which requires the use of cherries, can be made easily and there is no mess involved. However, she warned the two hosts to be careful when piercing the cherries to avoid making a big mess on Monique's beautiful pastel blue shirt.

At some point during the segment, Matt did indeed splatter cherry juice all over Monique's blouse.

And like anyone would have done in that situation, he looked shell-shocked with his hand over his mouth, his eyes popping out, saying nothing more than a distressed 'Oh God'.

He was so apologetic that he tried to make it up to Monique by fetching a white towel and a spray bottle of stain remover from the wardrobe department.

However, Monique said that nothing can get cherry stains out of clothes.

'You actually predicted that was going to happen!' she said to a surprised Courtney.

Matt quipped after he tried attempting to fix the situation: 'I am so sorry. That means an outfit change. I am like, an elite idiot.'

Well, seeing as that didn't quite work out, he took his seat next to Monique on the set of the show. With his partner now struggling to hide the stain with her necktie (which was supposed to hang down the centre of her shirt), he suggested that they just 'fling' the necktie over to one side.

Luckily, Monique did a great job of concealing the small stain with her necktie, which she casually cast over her right shoulder. Well played, Monique!

Viewers thought the whole segment was funny and said that the guest hosts were warm and natural. Many also said that they hoped they would be replacing the current hosts.

One viewer wrote: 'Wish these two could stay and [especially] Mon.'

'Love these two together, they should totally take over the weekday Sunrise,' another added.

A third remarked: 'Right 2023, these two lead anchors give the people what they want: Warmth, humour, quick wit, genuine and down-to-earth folks. No more dated and stifled Nat and Kochie.'

'Time for a change permanently. Out with the ancient people. Definitely not Sam he is a keeper,' another chimed in.

Key Takeaways

  • Matt Doran was caught in an embarrassing fail during a live in-studio cooking segment when cherry juice splattered all over Monique's blouse.
  • Monique did a great job of concealing the stain with her necktie, which was casually cast to the side.
  • The situation was met with amusement by viewers and many expressed a desire for Matt and Monique to become the permanent anchors of the show.

Normally, an embarrassing on-air blunder like this would be enough to make any presenter turn away in embarrassment. But fortunately, this incident turned out to be a positive one, leaving the fans to enjoy the show more! It just shows that good chemistry among presenters can resonate with the audience no matter how embarrassing the situation may be.

Well, at least he didn't rub the cleaner into the fabric to get it clean .... but wouldn't it have been fun trying?

Cherry juice stains:
If the stain is fresh, blot the stain with paper towels, then hold the fabric under a tap from the wrong side and flush it with cold water to force it out of the fabric.
Wash in hottest water recommended for the fabric using heavy-duty laundry soap.
If the stain has set, break it down before rinsing it.
Pre-treat the stain with lemon juice or vinegar, allow to sit for 5 minutes.
After 5minutes, rinse the stain with water to ensure that the acid doesn't damage the garment.
Then rub the stained area with detergent using your finger, then hand wash the garment as usual.

But aren't you supposed to remove the shirt from the body in the first place? Could be a whole new cleaning experience, or a new "X-rated" flick for all the seniors out there.
