Sunrise guest brutally honest about Today's Karl Stefanovic: 'Wimp'

We have to admit that we get a little bit of amusement out of watching the various breakfast shows try to one-up each other, mostly through performing wacky gimmicks sure to get a few laughs out of loyal viewers.

Most of the time it's all in good fun, but then there are occasionally the moments that will really have you gasping — whether in shock or while laughing, we leave that up to you.

Such was the case on an episode of Channel Seven’s Sunrise when rival show host Karl Stefanovic of Channel Nine’s Today was on the receiving end of some brutal honesty from a guest.

It all started when weatherman Sam Mac was in Broome while riding a camel for his feature. The area is perhaps most notable for the said activity, especially along its scenic Cable Beach.

Sam was with a local camel tour operator named John, who has been working for over 22 years ferrying visitors across the Western Australian town.

Perhaps to make polite conversation — and to avoid dead air, which is a broadcasting no-no — Sam asked John about his previous celebrity encounters. For sure, while working at a tourist spot, it’s not unreasonable to come across celebrities, right?

‘You’ve obviously had a lot of TV people, movie people. Who’s been the biggest wimp on a camel in your 22 years?’ Sam asked.

That’s where the conversation quickly took an unexpected — and hilarious — turn.

‘Oh, you’re going to love this,’ John said.

‘Karl Stefanovic.’

With not a moment spared, Nat Barr and David ‘Kochie’ Koch, who were watching the exchange live from Brekky Central, burst into laughter at John's big reveal!

John then shared that Today did a show some time back and it appears the tough talking Karl met his match in camels.

‘We did the Today show many years ago, and Lisa Wilkinson? Brave as all hell, do anything,’ he continued.

‘Karl? No, big girl’s blouse.’

By this point, Nat and Kochie were still laughing pretty hard. Sam for his part swore the whole thing was not set up ‘to have some sort of petty rivalry’ with their Channel Nine counterparts.

Determined to prove his point, John said: ‘Karl remembers’.

Sam replied, ‘Camels are a great judge of character, I’ve heard,’ before quickly adding ‘No, good on you, Karl.’

Now where is the popcorn while we wait for a response from Karl… kidding!

To be fair, Karl has also taken cheeky swipes back at Sunrise hosts.

If you remember, he called Kochie ‘hopeless’ in a boxing match while talking on-air with National Rugby League chairman Peter V’landys for the league’s Grand Final.

Key Takeaways

  • A guest appearing on Sunrise took a dig at rival host Karl Stefanovic live on-air, essentially calling him a 'wimp'.
  • The guest, who has been working as a camel tour operator in Broome were weatherman Sam Mac was, shared Karl was a 'big girl's blouse'.
  • Sam Mac swore he did not set the exchange up.
  • The guest insisted that Karl would remember what he's talking about.
  • The hosts of Sunrise and Today have exchanged friendly banter over the years, as in the cases of David 'Kochie' Koch and Karl.
The NRL chair was joking around with Karl about joining in a fist fight, insinuating that the 66-year-old Kochie would have been an easy opponent to begin with.

Karl went along, adding: ‘(Kochie's) hopeless! He's hopeless! Couldn't handle himself in the ring that's for sure.’

And then there’s this other gem: during their separate coverages of Queen Elizabeth’s death, Kochie took to Instagram to share a picture of Karl, who had his face between the bars of a gate, with the caption ‘Got to keep the rif-raf out’.

All seemed well on Karl’s part as he reshared the post on his personal social media accounts.

Don’t you just love these off-screen interactions between these morning show hosts? We sure do!

If you have time, do check out stories we have of our beloved Sunrise hosts, such as this rather embarrassing encounter Kochie had with a competition winner, or this heart-pounding stunt Sam took part in (DAYS after he reappeared on the show from paternity leave!)

So, what do you think? Was John exaggerating when he called Karl a ‘big girl’s blouse’? What would you do in Karl’s place?

About time someone had a piece of Karl. The unfortunate thing is that it’s more public exposure and attention drawn to KS, which we can live without, don’t you think?
