Styling Tips to Prepare Your Home for Autumn Season

We’re easing into the month of March already and it’s time to bid the summer season goodbye. And as the temperature slowly drops and the leaves start turning yellow, this might just be the perfect opportunity to switch up the decor in your home!

To keep us in the loop for the latest styling and home decoration trends this upcoming autumn season, Anne-Marie Bodal is here to share some words of wisdom.

“When you're going into the winter season you want to have these elements of cosiness in your home,” she said. “These will help you feel like winter's coming, and there's a space to rest and relax in your home.”

Anne-Marie is Kmart’s head of design, and according to her, there’s no need to spend big or do a total makeover just to give your home a new look. All you need is a little pop of colour to make all the difference.

Mix and match!

Anne-Marie’s first tip is to mix and match the existing pieces in your home with Kmart’s new living range.

The retail store takes into account what their customers already have in their homes when it comes to designing their new ranges. This way, customers can expect the products to work well on their own or paired with other pieces from the range.

The newly-released pieces are also designed to tie in with past and future collections from the store.

“We always look back,” said the designer.

To make your bedroom feel fresh and new just in time for autumn, she recommends going for the quilt-cover set for that splash of colour. For the living room, she recommends looking for a new lamp or a new cushion.

Layer your pieces!

A trick that designers often use to turn a piece of plain and boring furniture into an eye-catching centrepiece is to layer them with various products.

For this autumn season, Anne-Marie suggests layering your living spaces with soft tones.

You can try adding a new light-coloured rug in your living room, coupled with a cushion and a couple of throw pillows in matching colour palettes. For your coffee tables or shelves, a decor piece such as a vase or a lamp will freshen up the look.

And if you’re serious about your layering game and you want to take it to the next level, throw in a couple of scented candles to elevate the aesthetics.

Now, you can truly smell autumn in the air!

Don’t forget your textures!

One of the commonly forgotten aspects of interior decoration is the product’s texture. Often, people would only look at the colours and shapes to determine if the items would work well together. But the texture is actually an important factor.

So if ever you find yourself shopping for new pieces to add to your home and living spaces, don’t just think about the product’s colour and shape, consider their texture too.

And speaking of textures, one of the most in-demand items right now are furniture items that are covered in boucle material, such as Kmart’s boucle chairs and boucle ottomans.

Other trending textures you can consider are rattan and natural woven textures.

Follow the rule of three!

There is a little-known secret among home designers when it comes to styling a living space: group the items in odd numbers.

According to them, putting together three items of the same kind will look so much better than just having two.

“It looks more balanced and our eyes understand it more,” said Anne-Marie. “It's an instant way of actually making something look high-end and elevated.”

She suggests that if you’re going for a lamp, try coupling it with a vase and a small candle together. Having these three items with varying heights looks so good and will instantly elevate any space you put them into. Just remember to put the tallest item in the middle, with the two smaller objects in front.

Do people actually change their decor according to the season? How wasteful would that be. Through my life I have always gone for timeless, good quality items that would pass the test of time. Some of my furniture and accessories are over 40 years old that we had made when we first got married, it's still going strong and looks quite contempory even now. I can't imagine how much money I would have wasted if I changed the decor each season throughout my life.

On our local FB group a mother recently advertised a bunkbed with quite a modern design for sale at $500. She explained that the bed was in excellent condition as it was only two years old, but that her daughter (age not mentioned) now wants something else.

I had to ask my husband to handcuff me to the deck railings for a few hours until I had calmed down ...
