Stickjaw toffees

Ah, stick jaw toffees! These sweet and sticky treats were a staple at School Fetes back in the day. The School Mother’s Club would be in full swing, whipping up all sorts of delectable goodies, and this one was a big hit among the students. They’re not so great for your teeth, but let’s be honest, who could resist them? I remember how we used to line up eagerly, waiting for our turn to get our hands on these chewy delights. They were the perfect treat to cap off a day of school fete fun and fundraising. Do you have any fond memories of these Stickjaw toffees at your School Fetes?

When we lived in Moree NSW We had a dog called Jason, a boxer. As we lived across from the primary school, he used to go to assembly every morning and stand with the kindy kids till they went to school. One day he was late getting back, so I went over and found the Nurse trying to get his mouth open. He had been given a stickjaw toffee and of course, tried to eat it. We had to flush warm water down his mouth so he could open it.. He still went to school every day but never took anything from the kids again.

Stickjaw toffees, toffee apples which were apples on a stick covered in toffee, homemade honeycomb, pink and white coconut ice, jelly set in orange skin and cut into quarters, were just a few of the treats we could buy at our high school fetes. We never had fetes at primary school as went to small country schools. Fairy floss has always been at fetes and still is. It is about the only tradition that has continued.
