Startling Discovery in ALDI Broccoli Bag

Just when you think you've heard it all, we have a riveting tale to share. This story features an ALDI customer, a bunch of broccoli, and an unexpected surprise!

Neville Linton, a 63-year-old ALDI customer in the United Kingdom, was in for a shock as he came face-to-face with a snake in his bag of broccoli.

This surprising discovery spurred impromptu action, complete with reptile removal and a hasty trip back to ALDI.

Linton’s snake was identified as a young ladder snake, potentially capable of delivering a painful bite.

Just so you know, the ladder snake, scientifically known as Zamenis scalaris, is a type of snake that does not produce venom and belongs to the family Colubridae.

Due to Mr Linton's fear of snakes, his relatives, including his son Donovan, stepped in to assist him in capturing the snake.

Mr Linton said: 'It was pretty frightening. I'm not good with snakes. It's lucky I didn't just leave the broccoli out in the kitchen, or it would have been loose in the house.’

He added, 'That would have been a huge risk for us because we have two vulnerable people living here.'

Thankfully, in this case, no harm was done. The snake was returned to the ALDI store with due fanfare, and professional handlers at the Dudley Zoo took over from there.

An ALDI spokesperson assured customers that this was an isolated incident and not in line with their high standards.

'Our supplier has never had a complaint of this nature and has robust processes in place to prevent such issues occurring. We are investigating this isolated incident and have apologised to Mr Linton.'

Linton is seeking further compensation for his unnerving encounter, highlighting the emotional and potential health risk it posed to his household members.

He stated, 'It's just not good enough—the implications for us if it had got out in the house are huge. Plus, I'm phobic of snakes, so there's the emotional impact of that too.'

Key Takeaways
  • An ALDI customer found a young ladder snake in his bag of broccoli, an experience he described as 'frightening'.
  • The snake, found amidst the broccoli, can deliver a nasty bite despite being non-venomous.
  • The shocked customer returned the snake to the ALDI store, where he bought the vegetable. It was later identified as a young ladder snake at Dudley Zoo.
  • An ALDI spokesperson mentioned they are investigating this isolated incident, stating their supplier has robust processes to prevent such occurrences. They also apologised for not meeting their usual high standards.

As we wrap up this adventurous tale, remember to stay alert during our shopping expeditions. Be it online or in-person, inspecting your produce for any free tag-along is good practice.

Now seeking compensation for the trauma this caused him. What about the snake? It had to endure being stuck in with the broccoli and then transported all over the place. Pleeaase, just rant about it and let it go. No compensation is needed or warranted. No one's fault, just a weird thing to happen.

Some months ago I bought my usual bunches of broccolini from Aldi. Cooking the broccolini in the pan for dinner and my 7 year old grandson came over and said "Grammy there's something alive in your veggies!" Closer inspection showed a caterpillar frantically trying to escape the heat. He had apparently survived my washing of the broccolini but couldn't stand the heat! Further inspection of the rest of the bunch (with glasses on this time) showed he was not alone.

Ohh please! Seeking compensation??? I’m sure he got a fright. I’d have died on the spot! I’m scared to death of snakes! But no one put it there deliberately. It was an accident. People are so damned greedy!
