Spread the word! The BEST (and cheapest) home brand peanut butter

There is, in all honesty, no problem that cannot be remedied with a dollop of peanut butter. There's just something about how it sticks to the roof of your mouth and melts on your tongue that makes you feel better right away!

If you're craving something sweet, simply spread a generous amount of peanut butter on some toast or mix it with jam to make a delicious morning sandwich (or any time of day, really).

But lately, grocery bills have been going up, so you may be thinking about changing the way you shop to save money.

One option is to switch to store brands that are less expensive, but is it worth it to give up your favourite spread like peanut butter just to save money?

Don't worry, folks, because as it turns out, you don't have to!

The experts at CHOICE know that peanut butter is a staple in nearly every Australian home, so they recently conducted tests to determine which supermarket own-brand products are the least expensive without having to compromise the taste or the quality.

Want to know which supermarkets came out on top? Keep reading to find out!

When it comes to smooth peanut butter, the best supermarket home brand goes to…

Coles Peanut Butter Smooth ($3.5 for 500g)
  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 83% (Recommended)
  • Taste test score: 83%
  • Nutrition score: 80%
We have a winner! Coles' smooth peanut butter not only received the highest overall score in the smooth category, but it also received the highest score among all supermarket brands.

It did much better than big peanut butter brands like Bega and Sanitarium, as well as niche brands like Pic's, Byron Bay, and Ridiculously Delicious.

Here are the rankings for the rest of the supermarket home brands of smooth peanut butter:
  1. Coles Smooth: 83% (70 cents per 100g)
  2. Woolworths Smooth: 77% (48 cents per 100g)
  3. Aldi Bramwells American Style Smooth: 75% (70 cents per 100g)
  4. Aldi Bramwells Smooth: 65% (48 cents per 100g)
  5. ALDI Oh So Natural Smooth: 60% (88 cents per 100g)
  6. Woolworths Macro Organic Smooth: 42% ($1.60 per 100g)

When it comes to crunchy peanut butter, the best supermarket home brand goes to…

ALDI Oh So Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter ($3.29 for 375g)
  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 85% (Recommended)
  • Taste test score: 83%
  • Nutrition score: 80%
Oh So Natural by ALDI was not only the best of the crunchy home brand peanut butter evaluated, but it was also a strong contender for the overall best.

That's certainly impressive for a store brand from a supermarket; however, ALDI often outperforms its competitors in most CHOICE testings, so we suppose it’s really not that surprising!

While it's not the cheapest peanut butter on the market, CHOICE found that ALDI's Oh So Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter was the least expensive made entirely from peanuts.

Achieving a superior flavour profile with only peanuts is no small effort, given that most peanut butter relies on sugar, salt, vegetable oil, and other chemicals to get a 'better' flavour profile.

In terms of named brands, Bega Simply Nuts Crunchy received the highest rating (87%), while ALDI and Sanitarium Natural Crunchy tied for second place with scores of 85%.

Here are the rankings for the rest of the supermarket home brands of crunchy peanut butter:
  1. Aldi Oh So Natural Crunch: 85% (88 cents per 100g)
  2. Aldi Bramwells Crunchy: 78% (48 cents per 100g)
  3. Coles Crunchy: 75% (70 cents per 100g)
  4. Woolworths Crunchy: 65% (48 cents per 100g)
  5. Coles Organic Crunchy: 43% ($1.60 per 100g)

For all you Woolies devotees out there, we're sorry to say that compared to the peanut butter sold at ALDI and Coles, the supermarket's version falls short.

With a score of 77%, Woolworths Peanut Butter Smooth finished slightly ahead of Bramwells, another smooth peanut butter offered by ALDI but way below Coles' winning product. And with a score of only 65%, Woolworths' crunchy peanut butter is even lower on the ratings.

But what about the Woolies home brand of organic peanut butter? Is it any better?

In the tests, Woolies' peanut butter did not do very well. Credit: Woolworths.

Sadly… no.

In the taste category, the Woolies organic peanut butter performed far worse than its smooth and crunchy counterparts, earning only an abysmal 27%! Yikes.

Even the taste testers at CHOICE complained that the product smelled 'like plastic' and that they weren't completely 'happy' with their purchase.

So there you have it, folks! When it comes to the best home brand of peanut butter available in supermarkets nowadays, you can trust that ALDI and Coles will give you more value (and taste) for your money.

Now get that toast ready! On a side note: where can we sign up as peanut butter tasters for CHOICE? Asking for a friend…

Members, please note we also recently ran a story on the danger of peanut butter in plastic containers, so be careful! You can read more here.

Go for the product in the glass jar.

Something I can't work out about the Coles product: it's made in Australia from almost entirely imported raw ingredients. Are Australian peanuts REALLY so expensive that it's cheaper to import raw material from God-knows-where (China?).

Yesterday you wrote a review from experts, saying that the peanut butter sold in plastic tubs were the most dangerous item, to have in the cupboard Because it was a health hazar. Now you are writing about the best peanut butter is the Coles one which by the picture, are in plastic jars. Isn’t it a controversy??

But they are in PLASTIC jars….isn’t peanut butter in plastic jars all but deadly for you ????
