SPOILER ALERT: Leaked script reveals former stars to make an appearance for ‘Neighbours’ finale

After nearly 40 years of being broadcast on thousands of televisions nationwide, the hit Australian soap series is coming to an end – and former stars including Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan are rumoured to be returning to the ending of the show as a grand finale.

The latest edition of Gossip newsletter ‘Popb*tch’ claimed that Minogue and Donovan are set to reprise their roles as the lovebirds Charlene and Scott, who were featured on the show back in the 1980s. But unfortunately, they may not get as much screen time as we’re hoping for.

The report revealed that the two stars will appear right at the end of the final episode with Charlene and Scott returning to Ramsay Street together. The pair will step out of a car, more than 30 years after their wedding, and declare: "We're home." right before the credits roll.

It's yet to be confirmed whether or not this leaked information will be followed through.

However, Minogue previously teased her involvement in the Neighbours finale on May 1 as she posted a close-up photo of a script to her Instagram account – the details visible read that the scene is set outside, and features both Scott and Charlene.

The bit would give millions of diehard Neighbours fans some closure on how the couple fared after their televised wedding on July 1, 1987, which was watched by a whopping two million Australians. Their union was an even bigger hit when it was aired in the UK a year later, amassing 19.6 million viewers.

After getting married, the characters left Erinsborough and moved to Brisbane. Minogue and Donovan, who were dating at the time, took both countries by storm, and each went on to launch successful music careers in the UK.

But as all good things come to an end, Neighbours will be concluded after 37 wonderful years on our screens this August.

It was confirmed back in March after the Australian production company Fremantle Media failed to locate a new broadcast partner following the UK network Channel 5’s decision to terminate their partnership.

“Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show,” a post to the Neighbours’ Twitter account read.

“To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.”

In a desperate attempt to save the beloved show, more than 60,000 fans signed a petition after the announcement but it wasn’t enough.

But on the bright side, a host of the show’s most iconic characters will allegedly return to bid their farewells in the series along with Charlene and Scott.

Executive producer Jason Herbison confirmed that Harold Bishop (played by Ian Smith) would also make an appearance along with Paige Smith (Olympia Valance’s character), Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaighte) and Joel Samuels (Daniel MacPherson).

“It is such an honour to be invited back to celebrate the end of an era. I can’t wait to bring Izzy back to life, reunite with the cast and send off Neighbours with a bang.” shared Natalie.

The final episode is set to air on the first of August.

I have watched Neighbours (with very short breaks) since day one. What a pity to see it or any other Australian production come to an end. I, for one will miss it like I imagine millions of others will do also.
Vale Neighbours, my old friend.
Would love to see it from the start again.
