Southern states face gas supply crisis this winter—here's what you need to know

As winter approaches, concerns over gas supply shortages are growing, particularly for the southern states.

What was once a seasonal issue is now becoming a more persistent problem, with experts warning of potential shortfalls.

The latest reports have raised alarms about the future of Australia's gas market, and the impact could be felt across multiple sectors.

Australia's competition regulator had issued a warning that the east coast's gas supply was in decline, with southern states like NSW, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania facing continued reliance on Queensland to meet demand.

Despite adequate natural gas reserves, the country’s new gas production was not coming online fast enough to replace depleting traditional supply sources like the Gippsland Basin.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) made the findings in its interim report into the Gas Inquiry 2017-30, forecasting ‘small shortfalls’ of up to 16 petajoules during the winter months of 2025, when demand peaks.

It noted that as in previous years, gas supply during the winter would need to be drawn from Queensland and storage facilities.

This interim report highlighted ongoing risks of supply shortfalls in the southern states and the need for continued reliance on Queensland gas.

The ACCC’s July update had improved forecasts, but it had urged state and federal governments to ease the entry of new gas sources into the market.

The report stated that barriers to new supply included lengthy regulatory processes, significant capital costs, uncertain policies, and a lack of competition in upstream gas markets.

It also found that while production in Queensland was expected to increase, forecasted supply would exceed demand by 77PJ to 112PJ, but prices remained higher than pre-2022 levels.

International price hikes, coal-fired generator outages, domestic shortages, and the geopolitical impacts of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were key factors behind the sustained high prices.

The report acknowledged that prices had fallen since 2022 due to lower international prices and improved gas availability.

Minister for Resources, Madeleine King, had welcomed the findings, emphasizing that ‘a secure, reliable and affordable’ gas supply was essential for Australia’s renewable energy transition, which would rely on gas and battery storage.

‘This latest report from the ACCC shows we are securing the gas supply we need for a reliable east coast gas market,’ she had stated.

She had also pointed out that under the Albanese government, an additional 600 petajoules of gas had been injected into the east coast market to help keep prices under control.

Key Takeaways
  • ACCC warned of declining gas supply in southern states, with continued reliance on Queensland.
  • Despite sufficient reserves, new gas production is not fast enough to replace depleting sources like the Gippsland Basin.
  • Winter gas shortages are expected in 2025, with up to 16 petajoules of shortfalls during peak demand.
  • The ACCC called for easing barriers to new gas supply, citing regulatory and financial challenges.

As the situation unfolds, will the reliance on Queensland continue, or is there a solution on the horizon? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

There apparently was (& probably still is) plenty of gas for export & apparently much cheaper than Aussies have to pay!
Selling us out or trying to scare monger us away from gas into buying solar perhaps as they were putting a stop to gas appliances in new houses recently?

This really annoys me. Australia has huge amount of gas supplies. We sell it off to other countries for huge company profits but will not legislate big energy companies has to supply gas in Australia at a wholesale price. It belongs to all Australians. If they say NO remove there licence to another producer at NO cost. I'm sure many others would take the licence as billions of dollars are made year. Our politicians are gutless jellyfish . Just like the ACCC

I would prefer we didn't have to use gas at all. In my last place everything was electric so my bills were manageable. In this place the hot water heating and stove top is gas. I turned off the gas heating, which made a huge difference to my bills. I use electric devices like an airfryer and electric pan for cooking, and the electric oven for grilling.

What utter rubbish. There is plenty of gas for Australians. What needs to happen is that the gas requirements of Aussies should be filled FIRST, then export the rest to overseas markets. Do they really believe we are stupid and cant see through their spin.

This gas supply dilemma we now are experiencing is to be laid at the feet of the Labor Party and the Prime Minister at the time, Julia Gillard. We can thank her for the problems now facing us. Selling most of our Gas to overseas nations and not keeping enough for our own country. Typical of how Labor does not look forward. I see a problem with Electricity in our future as they close power stations before they have the infrastructure in place.

In WA the govt had a deal to save 15% for the domestic market which has been wonderful but that deal is coming to an end and I’ve heard the government here have signed another deal for 50 years to lose that deal so we’ll be paying a lot more for gas . I hope the other mob can see reason to keep some of our costs reasonable as it’s already hard enough as a pensioner on a a fixed income .

It wouldn't surprise me if the Chinese bought Australian natural gas and then sold it back to us for a substantial profit.
Hasn't this been happening with Japan over the years.....sell it to them for about 9c and buy it back at ridiculous amounts....Trade BULLSHIT. And they have put a stoppage on installing gas in new homes being built in Victoria I believe, in order to help push the ALL Electric Future program that they are continually spruiking. So many people in Victoria rely on GAS heating in their homes during the cold winter months...they have spent large amounts of money on their gas central heating and eventually it will all become useless if the Government gets it way. It seems so bloody wrong when Australia has such a large supply of Natural gas reserves on it's doorstep.

Victoria has been the "not go to" state to copy any of their dealings/laws etc. That idiot and morally deficient ex-premier, Daniel Andrews and the now premier have a lot to answer for. Unfortunately, the state population seems to have an oversupply of woke citizens who keep voting these repugnant premiers and state labor party into power. In Qld we finally got rid of the labor mob and now sit back to judge the new LNP government. Already it has ascertained that there is a $23b (yes billion) black hole in the budget that the previous mongrels incurred with impunity - and lied constantly about. This ex-gov. mob now have the temerity to blame LNP for not acting fast enough! (They have been in power for 2 months - ffs - not 12 years like the previous lot.)
Unless we start to hold the local, state and federal governments to serious account Australia is on a doomed path to becoming a 3rd world country pressured by the likes of Chinese and other countries for their own benefit. Wake up Australia.

Old saying ... no matter who you vote for, a politician still gets elected. Since time immemorial, they've all been the same: they get voted in for all the best promises and with the best of intentions, intent on changing whatever the other mob mucked up for everybody's benefit, but, once they get the taste of ministerial leather and all the perks that attach to it, they kind of forget their earlier pre-election promises and descend into the well-known "na-na-nee-na-na" examples of schoolboyish and -girlish behaviour that is shown on the TV during what passes for "news" these days.
Wouldn't it be interesting to find out what the "wages" bill for all three levels of government, added up Australia wide, costs the gullible electorate every year? And we pay these people ...

If we have to vote for these politicians to try & change life for the better…. then if they don’t do what they promise, we should have the right to vote them out. They all promise changes but never fulfill them. Albanese is such a fine example of this. Everything he promised Australians was like music to our ears. BUT…. exactly what has he fulfilled?
Labor is so full of crap. I will never vote Labor again. NEVER !!!!!!!!
Australia if floating on gas yet they tell us there will be shortages..🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Too many in-between companies in the market! We have wrecked the whole system, they need to break it up and start again.

Yair, right ... can you see the government and oil companies giving up their bonanza? What other commodity in the marketplace can jack up and drop its price seemingly willy-nilly? The so-called "price cycle" is ludicrous, allowed to continue by governments for the tax dollars they reap for doing nothing more than passing some legislation. "All those in favour? Against? The ayes have it."

I remember we were in Karratha WA a few years ago (where there is an important gas pipeline and huge refinery facilities) and they had run out of gas. Couldn’t believe it but that’s what they told us…

I started to read your comment as it sounded interesting, until I got to the word "woke" then I stopped reading it, do we as seniors, have to use a silly work used by the teens and 20's set to get our point across?

Of course we have the right to get rid of them via the vote, but what sort of damage do they do to Australia in the four years between votes when they're in power? And we can do bugger-all to change the system, they've made sure of that. If they thought of the nation before they thought of themselves, it would go a long way towards fixing the problems that face us, not only at home but also internationally. In the meantime, suck it up, princess ...
