Smarties

Who remembers indulging in Smarties as a kid? Their crunchy shells and the bursts of chocolate goodness inside? Apparently, these colourful confections were originally called ‘chocolate beans’ in the 1880s. Then, it became ‘Milk Chocolate in a Crisp Sugar Shell’ in 1937, before finally adopting the name we all know today—‘Smarties’. They were a childhood favourite, best enjoyed with friends. Do you have fond memories of savouring these treats? Tell us in the comments below.

You can buy them now in bags!!! Aldi had some a while ago and I have seen them in various shops!

My sister, who is 11 years older than me, used to pinch all the orange ones from me when Mum bought me a tube of smarties. She reckoned they tasted different from the others. I wouldn’t know would I lol

Yes, I have fond memories of sharing a box of smarties with a friend. I recall a lovely man who owned a corner store would give me free smarties...just had to look at him with my big brown eyes and he would give me treats! Red ones were my fave for some reason, but red is my fave colour. Lovely memories of the country towns with corner stores.

Before smarties I can remember chocos. They were round, in all colours and four for a penny. Other chocolate lollies for the same price were butter buttons and coconut balls. For threepence you got twelve, so a small bag of lollies. A big bag for sixpence was for older kids and a shilling's worth was only for boys who had just started work, as they soon found other ways to spend their money.
Mr Kilderry, the grocer, always included a bag of lollies in the order when he delivered it.
Mr Haywood, next door's gardener, always had a bag of lollies for me too. I remember running up and down as he pushed the lawnmower, yelling a conversation over it's whirring.
I had a full social life before I had to go to school. After that I remember a lot of boredom and restlessness, sitting at a desk getting taught, and not being allowed to talk or move.

Hi,my family tells me that in 1964 I was 3 and would call them Sumpolooloos!!!!The reason being that the add on the tvback then would show the picture you depicted above and the sing-phrase "Buy some for LuLu....the name of the girl in the add.I was learning to speak English and only little hence the Sumpolooloos.Does anyone remember that add on tv?1963-64

I used to love Smarties "and you get lots and lots and lots and lots OF SMARTIES - buy some for Lulu" in the add. All the lollies back then tasted really good, when I was lucky to get a mixed bag for a few pennies then cents. They don't taste like they used to though. The Jelly Babies were covered in a fine powder? and you could taste real orange, lime and raspberry flavours. The chocolate of today has also changed and I don't eat it anymore. Maybe my taste buds have changed! They had "fags" for a while, they came in a small packet and were white with a red tip and we used to pretend we were smoking like the adults. They didn't last long and were taken off the market thank goodness.

At last!Someone remembers the add!!!!Thankyou,I was starting to think all my siblings were pulling my leg.Yes you are right,it's not your taste buds, everything doesn't taste like any thing anymore.I had forgotten about the FAGS ,yes remember them well,we had fun pretending, ofcourse it's all totally inappropriate now..we see that...but you know for the most part the baby boomers all turned out ok,even after all the so called horrendous, politically incorrect ways of our childhoods.I have never had any inclination to drink, smoke or take drugs and yes,I bought and ate FAGS😩What about those black choo choo bars and Redskins?????Thanks for remembering.Have a nice weekend.

Our generation were so lucky to have all the good lollies back then. You could get red frogs, green frogs, musk sticks, mint leaves, sherbies, cobbers, chocolate coconut stars, snakes, milkshakes, licorice straps and more but he choice was hard when you only had a few pennies or cents so we made them last and sucked on them til they no more in your mouth. We never knew when we would be lucky enough to get another small white paper bag of these beauties.

Those choo choo bars, I think they had a blue wrapper with a train on it, and Choo Choo Bar. We used to get really back lips and tongues, but they were really good and seemed to last for ages, we had alot of fun. I'd keep some for the next day, they were probably alot bigger back then, this is way before shinkflation started. Glad to be a baby boomer and still going for an old chook!

Ru serious??Choo Choo bars still available???I want a box of 100.
Can't wait for the funny looks when I go to the Coles and WAIT to be served.
