But what if there was a way to save on chicken—one of the most popular protein sources—without compromising quality or taste?

During a recent visit to their local Woolworths supermarket, one shopper discovered a surprising price difference that could significantly impact your weekly grocery budget.

Woolworths’ Chicken Mixed Pieces, where the chicken has been cut up for you, are more affordable per kilo than the supermarket's whole chicken.

Chicken Mixed Pieces would cost only $4.50 per kilo, while a Whole Chicken costs $5.50 per kilo.

Although roasting a whole chicken can yield scrumptious results, roasting and flavouring individual chicken pieces also works well.

And at $1 less a kilo, it's a saving that's hard to ignore.

The shopper also visited Coles and ALDI in the same shopping centre in Baulkham Hills in Sydney's West.

While both had whole chickens in stock, they didn't have chicken portions, only packs of wings and/or drumsticks.

For those who enjoy chicken, these are usually more economical options, but this limits the option to one variety.

However, Coles has marked down its Whole Chicken to $4.50 per kilo, matching the price of Woolworths Chicken Mixed Pieces.

ALDI outdid them all, with its whole chickens selling for $3.99 per kilo.

Plain whole chickens, chicken portions, and mixed chicken pieces always cost less.

This option also leaves plenty of room for your own delicious, budget-friendly recipes.

A great meal prep idea is to marinate your chicken as soon as you get home, then freeze it in portions for quick, flavorful meals throughout the week.

You will find though if you buy chicken pieces they do not include breast portions only thigh, drumsticks and wings so more economical but more messy to buy the whole chicken and cut it up yourself

I agree Aldi are not any cheaper than buying in Woolies and shopping your specials when available.
Aldi never has anything on special. They take people in with all the other goods they sell. I admit they have a couple of items I like including Di San stain remover. If you want to save money you need to shop around as we all know.

Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, IGA do not have price agreements! NOT. No matter which of the major, and many minor, grocery chain stores have exactly the same prices (ALDI may drop 1c to appear cheaper but load on your credit card purchase) which will fluctuate at exactly the same time and exactly the same amount. Pure coincidence they will tell you.
ALDI's generic items are no cheaper than Coles/Woolies, just marketed better.

Yes, we all need to be efficient in the way we budget for our foods and in turn the quality of our meals. Remember unless there are some vital sanitary/cleaning products required, in the main the best places to move around the isles is to generally stick to the outside. Buy whole foods, good protein, and good fats, eliminate most sugar from your diet, don't buy packaged or process foods. Re-channel you spending to the good foods. Pay more for good beef, chicken and seafood and buy less of the junk we are all addicted to. Don't buy that packet of biscuits, instead substitute that money for good protein.

Good meats go up in price and are substantially more expensive than other good quality food items. We can't avoid that. Whether that be unscrupulously or by the very nature of demand. Do not put your gladiator outfit on and 'fight for the right on the common man!' so to speak. Instead re-examine and re-assess your unhealthy lifestyle (and that which you may provide to your family), eliminate wrong foods (generally found up and down the middle isles) and re-direct you're spending to healthier options albeit more expensive.

Do not eliminate the ability to eat good foods by complaining about their prices. Instead spend money on things that really matter and less on those that don't. I will bet my life that some of the complaints (of course not all) come from people that still smoke and are happy to pay upwards of $40 for a packet of cigarettes instead of spending that $40 on good meats.

Of course, there will be those people that genuinely will and are struggling financially to afford the better-quality foods. Of course, that is an issue and one that can be very difficult, however it's amazing what you can achieve by changing your spending habits and re-assessing what keeps you healthy, whilst always making sure that you are honest with yourself when you re-assign priority.

I buy my meat at my butcher’s and its prices are reasonable and they go up a dollar or two over the years , and I’ve been buying from them for almost 30 years, and you can see them growing old like me.😂
I was sitting having a coffee the other day, the young butcher came out to the meat display and proceeded to put all the sausages in the window with his bare hands. A customer came along, and he served them with a plastic bag over his hands, not touching the meat. I was considering buying from the butcher until I saw that. What's the point of the bag on the hand if you have already mauled all the meat?

I only buy Woolworths whole chicken if they haven't got Steggles brand. And then I'd only buy that when they have an offer on it.

This is how I do it.
first; always buy out of date chicken whenever available . I often buy several >cook>remove bones>freeze ;)
IMO ; there is more meat to bone ratio with larger birds --- Coles often have them at $4.50-$5 a Kg
Generally ; the meat less bone equals about double the price paid --- $5 pkg full chook = $10 pkg for the meat . Compare that to the price of "pieces" most of which in bone
Don't buy pieces of chicken ! It can be expensive
My big trick : buy large fresh chooks (2.5 kg +) . Remove the legs/thighs . Remove the breast/wings. Does not have to be butcher perfect . Just hack'em off while learning . I also remove the skin .
Those four sections will cook a lot faster than a full bird. Small oven around 40-45 minute . I often use a slow cooker
The carcass : I feed that to Dog . You can also boil it to made stock/soup far better the salty crap you buy . Or be a nice to a neighbour . Cooking juices can be used to add interest to dry dog feed .

PLEASE NOTE : The skin is the bad part of chicken as it's ALL FAT! You know ; the FAT we should not be eating because most of are over weight (or worse)
