Slash your electricity bills this winter with the best heaters Australia has to offer

As winter approaches and temperatures drop, we might find ourselves longing for cosy nights indoors to keep warm. However, the rising costs of living paired with the dreaded surge in energy bills during the colder months can leave many of us feeling the chill.

But worry not! Our friends over at Canstar Blue have come to the rescue, revealing the most budget-friendly and energy-efficient heaters on the market that'll keep your homes snug and your electricity bills down.

Given the fluctuating costs of electricity across the nation, it might surprise you to know just how much we Australians end up paying for our energy bills per quarter.

South Australia leads the pack with an eye-watering average rate of $349, followed closely by New South Wales ($338) and Queensland ($336).

Comparatively, residents of Western Australia and Victoria enjoy more affordable average rates at $243 and $302, respectively.

But the good news is that with the right heater, you can save a considerable amount on these winter energy bills, which often skyrocket by an additional $200 compared to the warmer months, and even more so when other costs are factored into the equation.

Experts have ranked brands such as Rinnai, Dimplex, De'Longhi, and Dyson at the forefront of long-term energy efficiency.

The top picks include the Dimplex Electric Fire Heater ($299) and the De’Longhi Tower Ceramic Heater ($259) for small spaces. They’re also the cheapest options, but they won’t compromise on heating performance.

If you're after something a bit more long-term, regarding both quality and longevity, then look no further than the Rinnai Titan Unflued Natural Gas Radiant Heater ($1,199) and the Dyson Hot+Cool Fan Heater (priced at $749 originally, but as of writing it’s on sale for $499 right now). Though they come with a higher price tag, they are more durable, and you’re sure to get the most long-term value for money by investing in a great-performing heater.

Why are these heaters so energy efficient?

Gas heaters and efficient reverse-cycle air conditioners usually come out on top in terms of energy efficiency due to their long-term cost savings.

However, electric heaters don't usually score too well in this category due to their high electricity usage rate, which typically means using 1,500 watts of electricity per hour.

Despite that, Canstar Blue's research has shown that energy-efficient electric heaters are generally the best option when it comes to warming medium to large spaces.

With portable electric models such as the De’Longhi 1500W Column Heater and the Kambrook 2000W Ceramic Tower Heater being particularly popular options.

Of course, saving money on your heating doesn't just stop with selecting the most energy-efficient heater; there are other measures you can take to keep your electricity bills in check without compromising on warmth:
  • Consider long-term investments: While gas heaters and reverse-cycle air conditioners may be more expensive upfront, they're cheaper to run in the long term and can pay for themselves through the savings you'll make on your energy bills.
  • Utilise heater timers: The timer function on your heater can help prevent you from accidentally leaving the heater on for longer than needed, which would rack up those costly energy bills.
  • Make use of natural heating: Opening curtains during the day to let sunlight in, ensuring proper insulation and sealing gaps between doors and windows can help maintain heat within your house.
  • Upgrade appliances when necessary: Older heater models tend to run inefficiently and might cost more to use in the long run. Replacing them with newer, more efficient models can lead to substantial savings.

A great way to get a warm home is to purchase an Ethanol Heater which are very cheap to operate and you get the experience of having an open fire and a very warm home.

Would someone please do a comparison on hot water systems please. I just received a brochure stating that the government are giving them away for free.
