Singer and Prince's younger sister Tyka Nelson (64) passes away

The music world is once again touched by tragedy as another influential figure passes.

Singer Tyka Nelson has passed away at the age of 64.

The sad news was confirmed by her son, President Nelson, which left fans and family members mourning her unexpected departure.


Born Tyka Evene Nelson, she was the only full sister of the iconic Prince Rogers Nelson, simply known as Prince.

Yet, Nelson was also a talented musician in her own right.

Born two years after the 'Purple Rain' singer, she shared with him both a familial bond and a deep connection to music.

Their parents, John L Nelson and Mattie Della Shaw, were jazz musicians.

Later on, she married Maurice Phillips and was a mum to six children.

While the cause of her death remains disclosed, her half-sister, Sharon, offered a comforting thought.

'She had her own mind. She's in a better place,' Sharon shared.

She is survived by her two sons and her half-siblings Sharon, Norrine Nelson, and Omarr Baker.


Tyka Nelson's music journey began after releasing her debut album, Royal Blue, under Cooltempo Records in 1988.

The album's hit single, 'Marc Anthony's Tune', achieved notable success, as it reached number 33 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

She also had more hits, such as 'No Promises,' 'L.O.V.E.,' 'Paris,' and 'Try My Passion.'

She released four albums throughout her career, with her 2011 album Hustler being her final record.

The loss of Tyka Nelson came nearly a decade after her brother's passing.

Prince died on 21 April 2016 from an accidental overdose. He was 57.


During her Australia tour In 2018, Tyka Nelson brought her brother's memory to life with a tribute show, Nothing Compares 2 Prince.

This tour was a homage to her brother's extraordinary talent.

She expressed her sense of duty to Prince's fans.

'It's something that he wanted, and I feel a responsibility to the fans. They loved him so much,' Tyka shared.

The Australian tour also marked her last public performance.
