Shoppers are losing their minds over this controversial $7 Woolworths item

Regarding seasonal treats, a long-cherished favourite has remained a staple for many.

But what happens when a classic is reimagined with a modern twist? A new creation, blending tradition with an unexpected flavour combination, has sparked discussion among shoppers.

Some are eager to try it, while others are unsure about the bold change. Either way, it’s certainly getting people talking.

Priced at a reasonable $7, the Hot Cross Bun Mudcake was released on 19 March and has since been the talk of the town—or at least the talk of the supermarket aisles and social media platforms.

The Woolworths Bakery team has taken a bold step by combining the iconic spices and sultanas of hot cross buns with the rich, dense texture of a mud cake, all topped off with a spiced white chocolate ganache.

The fusion of these two treats has sparked a debate as heated as a freshly toasted hot cross bun.

The key ingredient causing the divide? Sultanas. Those little dried grapes can turn dessert lovers into fierce critics or passionate defenders.

One shopper, Nick, didn't mince words when he expressed his disdain for sultanas in hot cross buns, going as far as to meticulously pick out every piece of the dried fruit from his slice of cake.

'Cheers with no stupid sultanas,' he declared, ready to 'fight' anyone who dared to challenge his anti-sultana stance.

On the other side of the spectrum, another shopper, Nectro, was pleasantly surprised by the ganache and admitted that the cake exceeded his expectations.

'Even the sultanas work,' he suggested that traditional hot cross bun enthusiasts would likely enjoy this new twist.

'I feel like you’re getting a hot cross bun and a mudcake. I’m not mad. I’m not upset. It is what it is,' Nick answered.

The cake's reception on social media has been just as polarised.

In the popular social media group Addicted to Bargains, opinions ranged from outright disgust at the sight of raisins on top to praise for the cake's ability to capture the essence of a hot cross bun.

Some suggested heating the cake slightly to enhance its deliciousness, while others rejected the idea of sultanas invading their mudcake experience.

'Imagine putting sultanas on one of life’s greatest pleasures. Criminal,' another chimed in.

Amidst the Sultana saga, some shoppers focused on other aspects of the cake.

Nick, for instance, wished for a stronger cinnamon flavour to bring the hot crossbun experience full circle.

Meanwhile, Laura McLeod, Woolworths cake category manager, expressed excitement ahead of the cake's release, highlighting the combination of warmth, spice, and the much-loved caramel mud cake base.

'Our latest Mudcake innovation, the hot cross bun flavour, combines the warmth and spice of an Easter classic, the traditional hot cross bun, with the iconic caramel mudcake base we know our customers love,' she said.

As we approach Easter, it's clear that Woolworths has given us more than just a cake; it's given us a topic of conversation, a reason to debate, and perhaps a new tradition.

Whether you're a Sultana supporter or a detractor, this $7 mud cake has made a splash.

I would eat a small piece of chocolate mud cake at a pinch, but you csn keep the sickly caramel but would not ruin a hot cross bun by mixing it with anything. But again each to their own.
I have still to sample a hot cross bun this year, putting it off as long as a I can as I csn get carried away.
