Shopper finds hilarious cheeky message at Woolworths self-serve checkout

We’ve all had an awkward moment or two in the supermarket checkout – items not scanning properly, our payments not going through, or not being able to find the right button on the touchscreen checkouts.

But for one Woolworths customer, this awkward moment came in the form of a naughty message that appeared on the screen of a self-serve checkout.



Technology may be convenient, but it is far from perfect. A regular trip to Woolworths for one shopper turned into a hilarious moment after a naughty message flashed up on the screen while they were at the self-serve register.

Sharing the funny incident on Facebook, the shopper explained that she and a friend had been paying for an item at the self-checkout when the unexpected message revealed its cheeky self.

‘Hilarious! Check out how my friend’s rose-scented deodorant scanned at her local Woolies,’ the shopper wrote.

They attached a photo of the register’s screen showing that the name of the spray had automatically been abbreviated to sound a lot more risqué.



It read: ‘MyArSeSpray 125ml.’

Many Facebook users were amused at the shopper’s post.

‘That’s bloody gold,’ one shared.

‘Are you sure you want to buy that? It might not smell too good!’ Another quipped.



This isn’t the first time that technology has (hilariously) failed us, too. Other people have shared stories online about their own funny experiences. Posting on the social media forum Reddit, one user uploaded a photo of their resting heart rate at 0 bpm with the caption: ‘Ah, yes. The ultimate relaxation.’

‘Seems unhealthy,’ one quipped. While another pointed out that at least this means the user finally ‘gets to rest’.

In another instance, one social media user decided to test out Siri’s response to this question:

‘What is the cost of a train ticket from Sydney to Brisbane?’ Which is a fairly straightforward question.

However, the AI responded with: ‘The answer is about 28.8 quadrillion kilometre US dollars squared.’

This delighted many forum users, who took turns making fun of the AI’s response.

‘I’m glad to see even artificial intelligence just blindly makes things up when it doesn’t know how to solve a question,’ one said.

‘It’s obviously Australian. It should be in Australian kilometres dollars squared,’ another quipped. While someone else responded: ‘Seems 100% accurate to me, don’t see the problem.’

‘I got 17.9 quadrillion kilometres US dollars squared. You're getting ripped off mate.’



Of course, human errors can also be a source of entertainment for many social media users.

One Woolies customer asked the staff at the supermarket to leave the top of a custom-made cake blank…and that’s exactly what they did.

‘This is not a joke. This is the cake we collected from Mayfield Woolworths this morning for a work event today,’ the customer wrote and attached this photo:

Woolworths responded to the shopper, stating: ‘We're glad our Mayfield team could provide you with a little giggle today, and we'll be sure to let them know.’



In another instance, a customer shopping at Woolworths found a very funny mistake (or was it intentional?) on a recent purchase. The shopper said they were thrilled to find a Yum Cha At Home Shiitake Vegetarian Dumplings at their local store with a huge markdown.

That excitement didn’t last long as it was replaced with confusion over the unfortunate placement of the ‘Quick Sale’ markdown sticker on the dumpling packs.

‘All I see is S*** Vege Dumplings,’ the customer wrote and uploaded the photo above. Those who saw the shopper’s post online were left in stitches – with many wondering if this was done on purpose.

‘I bet the person doing markdowns did that on purpose!’ One exclaimed.

‘Whoever did the sticker placement deserves a medal!’ Added another.

AI is a misnomer as there is little if any intelligence associated with such programming. Woolies own chat bot 'assistant' (aka pain in the a*ss), happy to run you into dead end circles, needs to be deleted and replaced with a human being. AI should be renamed to Artificial Ineptitude.
