The convenience of ride-sharing services like Uber has revolutionised the way many of us travel. For seniors, in particular, these services offer a sense of independence and mobility that can be life-changing. However, a recent incident in Dallas has raised serious concerns about the safety of these services, especially for the elderly.

In a disturbing event caught on surveillance video, Suleman Gauba, a 68-year-old man, was assaulted by his Uber driver following a dispute over legroom. The footage, which has since sent shockwaves through the community, shows Mr Gauba and his wife waiting for their ride in the Dallas Design District. As they settle into the back seats of the driver's Chevrolet Malibu, it becomes clear that there is a problem.

The car remains stationary for over two minutes before Mr Gauba exits, only to be blindsided by the driver with a punch to the back of the head. The force of the blow sends the elderly man tumbling to the ground, leaving him sprawled out and vulnerable. His wife, witnessing the attack, slowly emerges from the vehicle, undoubtedly in shock over the sudden violence.

The root of the altercation, according to Mr. Gauba, was a complaint about the insufficient legroom in the back seat. 'I cannot sit in the back seat,' he explained to Fox4. 'Very small place, you know?' When he voiced his discomfort, the driver cancelled the ride and demanded that they leave the car. It was at this point that the situation escalated, leading to the driver's violent reaction and subsequent flight from the scene before authorities could arrive.

This incident is not only appalling but also serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with ride-sharing services. While most rides occur without incident, the fact remains that passengers are placing their trust in strangers. For seniors who may have mobility issues or other vulnerabilities, this trust is particularly sacred.

The Dallas Police Department is actively investigating the assault, and Mr Gauba has expressed his desire for justice, stating that the driver 'deserves jail.' Meanwhile, Uber has responded to the complaint lodged by Mr Gauba and his wife, stating that 'violence of any kind is not tolerated' on their platform and confirming that the driver's access has been removed.

As members of the Seniors Discount Club, it's essential to remain vigilant and informed about the services we use. While ride-sharing can offer many benefits, it's crucial to take precautions. Always check the driver's ratings and reviews, and if possible, travel with a companion. If you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe during a ride, don't hesitate to end the trip and contact the authorities if necessary.

Absolutely abominable behavior from this Uber driver....whether young, middle aged, or elderly, male or female.... passengers deserve to be treated with the utmost respect....with the exception of any who may be intoxicated, under the influence of drugs, or just angry/annoying etc. Hope that the driver in question is found and brought before the courts and is given an appropriate verdict and fine/jail sentence. And also is required to pay for any medical expenses that may have been incurred by the passenger as a result of the altercation.

With all of the availability in the USA with litigation lawyers, I reckon the victim could make a "Squill" out of the Uber arsehole. Sue for his house if necessary.

We are living in a world where some think violence is ok if they don't like what someone else says. No respect for the older generation either. God help us in the years ahead cos violence seems to be the means of making a point!

Pputting him in jail is just giving him a holiday, send him to fight in palestine

They don't say anywhere what the man said to the driver to make him that angry. You don't punch people for just saying there's not enough leg room. It had to be a much bigger argument - it sounds like the passenger got quite abusive first. Not an excuse for violence, but sounds like the driver was antagonised.

This highlights the vulnerability of the elderly. Elderly people place their faith in these services like Uber ride share. However, I would like to think that those who perform the services are police checked for criminal history and or forms of mental illness. As an elderly person, many of whom have mobility issues, you are giving these strangers access (knowledge) of your vulnerabilities and your address. if these service providers are picking elderly people up or dropping them off at their home address. The potential of undesirable individuals to infiltrate ride share services and commit physical, financial or other form of abuse toward vulnerable elderly people cannot be overstated.

I don't agree with the violence far from it, but my gut is telling me there is more than meets the eye to this story.
Unless the uber drive just got out of the wrong side of the bed? Maybe he was having a bad day, and the comment was the straw that broke the camel's back. No excuse for violence.

As Uber are private vehicles you got to expect a compact car and if there was such an issue with leg room why didn't the passenger asked the driver if he could sit in the front. Sounds like an entitled man who expects the world to revolve around him and his expectations

The article stated that the vehicle was stationary for over two minutes before this incident so one would have to wonder what transpired in this time. The passenger rear door is open, giving the impression the gent was not sitting behind the driver, who because of his height would have had his seat right back, restricting leg room, therefore the obvious solution for me would be to ask the driver to put the front passenger seat forward if this wasn't already done.

If his wife was also cramped & if the seat was moved forward, she could sit in the middle of the back seat, slightly twisted to her right with legs behind the front passenger seat.

(What occurred behind the vehicle between the driver & passenger prior to the assault needs to be known).

As stated above by members, we don't know all the facts & 2 minutes is a long time to be stationary in a vehicle in the situation described but assault is still not the way to solve any problem.

I hope the gutless arsehole got charged with assault and any other charges that could have been made and of course loose his job as a driver for Uber
