Shocking news from high seas: Below Deck star announces cancer battle

Navigating through life's turbulent waters, the Below Deck star recently shared a harrowing update with his fans.

The captain, known for steering the yacht on the popular Australian 7Bravo series, took to Instagram to reveal his diagnosis of melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer.

Despite the sombre news, his determination to face the challenge inspires many in his community.

In a candid video message that has since captured the hearts of many, Jason Chambers detailed his journey of discovery and diagnosis.

He explained that a biopsy conducted in Bali was identified as melanoma, and he is now amid an anxious wait for the specimen to be re-evaluated back in Australia.

'The Australian doctors, who are fantastic in Australia, weren't happy with what the indications told them to go to stage two, which would be to cut out a bigger section and test the glands,' Chambers expressed in his video.

Chambers' diagnosis highlights the high rates of skin cancer in Australia, where the sun is especially intense.

He shared a sobering statistic that at least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime.

Reflecting on his past, Chambers admitted to a cavalier attitude towards sun protection in his earlier years.

'I never used to wear sunscreen when I was on the boat. I used to put zinc on my nose because of the chemicals,' he said.

However, he acknowledged the availability of chemical-free sun protection products and stressed their importance.

'For someone that spent their life in the sun, as a child playing sports to working on the ocean, I thought I was resistant to the damaging effects of the sun,' he shared.

Chambers' love for the sun is evident, but he now advocates for a balanced sun exposure approach.

What he initially thought was a mere skin spot evolved within just six months, illustrating how rapidly skin cancer can progress if left unchecked.

In a heartfelt conclusion to his post, Chambers urged his followers to find a chemical-free sunscreen, seek shade, and prioritise their health.

The outpouring of support in the comments section of his post was immediate, with followers offering prayers and positive thoughts for his recovery.

As we process this shocking news from a beloved figure of the high seas, let us take a moment to consider our health and well-being.

Skin cancer is a formidable foe, but we can all stand a better chance against it with vigilance and proactive measures.

Remember to wear protective clothing, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen, and regularly check your skin for any changes.

If you notice anything unusual, don't hesitate to consult a healthcare professional.

Gee I should have got on the bandwagon when I was diagnosed with Melanoma. Get a skin check every year people and they can get the cancer before it gets to the no return point. Mine was just starting so I got it early. My husband and I go every year to get our skin checked. And not all skin cancers look menacing. Mine looked like an age spot.

Never heard of him or below deck 😳
Ditto here as well. I've never been on or in his boat either.

It makes you wonder, as a youngen in my mid teens, in summer, out in the sun all the time, nothing but a pair of shorts on. This was to get as brown as you could possibly be which was all the go back then in the latter '50's.
Now, looking back, how lucky I am not to have suffered any detrimental affects of my "uneducated" thoughts & practices.
