Shocking losses: Hollywood's Treat Williams and famed author Cormac McCarthy leave a tremendous legacy

Tragedy has struck the world of arts and entertainment as the world lost two remarkable talents this week: Hollywood actor Treat Williams and renowned author Cormac McCarthy.

Let's take a moment to celebrate their extraordinary accomplishments and incredible legacies.

Hollywood veteran Treat Williams loses life in a fatal motorcycle accident.

Treat Williams, an esteemed actor with over 50 years of experience in show business, tragically passed away at the age of 71 after a devastating motorcycle accident near Dorset, Vermont.

The actor’s longtime agent, Barry McPherson, confirmed the circumstances surrounding the accident, saying, ‘He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off.’

The actor was airlifted to a hospital in New York, where he was pronounced dead.

His family also released a statement to the public, which reads: ‘It is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Treat Williams has passed away tonight in Dorset, Vermont after a fatal motorcycle accident. As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved at this time.’

‘It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him,’ the statement continued.

Williams was known for his dedication to his craft, making an enduring impact through his performances on-screen and on stage. His family's statement captured their grief as well as Williams' love for his work: ‘Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it.’

Williams' acting journey began in the late 1970s, earning three Golden Globe nominations with his first for his role in the 1979 musical film adaptation of Hair. Further Golden Globe acting nominations followed for his role in the 1981 film Prince of the City and the 1984 classic A Streetcar Named Desire.

His career spanned various films, including 127 Hours, Miss Congeniality 2, and The Deep End of the Ocean.

Williams also held recurring roles in several TV shows, such as Everwood, Chicago Fire, Blue Bloods, and American Odyssey. Fondly known as 'the heart of Hollywood’, Williams left an indelible mark on the film industry.

Treat is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam Van Sant, and their two children, Gille and Ellie.

Celebrated author Cormac McCarthy passes away at 89.

Cormac McCarthy, one of the most revered American authors, passed away at the age of 89 due to natural causes, according to his Penguin Random House publisher, Alfred A. Knopf.

His career spanned over 60 years. McCarthy was also hailed by the late literary critic Howard Bloom as the ‘true heir’ to celebrated authors Herman Melville and William Faulkner.

For years, he wrote while living on grants, most notably through the MacArthur ‘Genius Grant’, which he received in 1981.

His works became well-known for their violent and bleak portrayals of the United States and its borderlands, including novels like Blood Meridian, The Road, and All the Pretty Horses.

Despite his extensive career, McCarthy remained relatively obscure for much of his life, avoiding typical author obligations such as book tours, signings, and interviews.

‘Someone would call up and offer him US$2,000 to come to speak at a university about his books,’ his second wife, Annie DeLisle, told reporters.

‘And he would tell them that everything he had to say was there on the page. So we would eat beans for another week.’

But for all his literary achievements, McCarthy once claimed that he was not an avid reader in his childhood and adolescent years. This changed, however, when he served in the US Air Force while stationed in Alaska.

His career soared with his novel All the Pretty Horses, which became a bestseller and earned him the 1992 National Book Award.

He later won the Pulitzer Prize for his heart-wrenching novel, The Road. Oprah Winfrey, who selected The Road for her book club, played a substantial role in elevating McCarthy's status.

McCarthy's works have even graced the silver screen. Adaptations include the Coen Brothers' film version of No Country for Old Men, which went on to win four Academy Awards.

Many of his fellow authors grieved the loss of a great writer on social media, including critically-acclaimed horror novelist Stephen King.

These two giants of the arts and entertainment world will be greatly missed, but their legacies will continue to inspire and entertain millions.

Let us remember their work, appreciate their talents, and pass on their stories to future generations.
