Secrets revealed: Find out how shopping at ALDI or Bunnings could slash your cleaning product bills!

In the current economic climate, every penny counts, and Australians feel the pinch regarding the cost of living. With prices rising, savvy shopping has become more important than ever, particularly for our over-60s community, who often manage on fixed incomes. One area where significant savings can be made is in the household cleaning aisle, and ALDI and Bunnings might be the secret to keeping your home sparkling without breaking the bank.

Jodie Irwin, a 45-year-old carer from Glebe, Sydney, is one such shopper who's turned to the Reject Shop in search of bargains on essentials like dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, and surface wipes. 'You have to save where you can,' she says, echoing a sentiment many of us can relate to. While the Reject Shop's rotating product lines mean brand consistency is hit-or-miss, the savings can be substantial.

But it's not just the Reject Shop that's offering relief to consumers. In a recent purchasing test conducted by Guardian Australia, which compared cleaning product prices across several retailers, including Coles, Woolworths, ALDI, Bunnings, and the Reject Shop, ALDI emerged as the clear winner for value. The test included items like a cream cleaner, glass cleaner, dishwashing liquid, and laundry powder, and it was found that ALDI's prices were up to 40 per cent cheaper than Coles and Woolworths' equivalent products.

This isn't the first time ALDI has been recognised for its competitive pricing. Research by Choice has previously suggested that shopping at ALDI can be around 25 per cent cheaper than at the major supermarkets. And it's not just about the price; ALDI's products also perform well, with their Tandil Ultra Power Soak dishwashing liquid and Laundrite laundry powder scoring high marks in effectiveness tests.

Bunnings, known for its vast range of home improvement products, also offers some surprising deals on cleaning items, mainly when bought in bulk. For those who can afford the upfront cost and have the space to store larger quantities, Bunnings' prices per litre or kilogram for name-brand products like Palmolive dishwashing liquid and Omo laundry powder can be significantly lower than supermarket prices.

The Reject Shop, too, provides a haven for bargain hunters like Reshma Ravichander, a chef visiting Sydney from the Northern Territory. She found cleaning products at the Reject Shop much cheaper than at nearby supermarkets, with savings on well-known brands like Vanish and Ajax.

While the cost of living crisis looms large, it's heartening to know there are still ways to cut costs without compromising quality. For those looking to stretch their dollar further, considering the less conventional retailers for your cleaning supplies is worth considering.

However, it's not just about where you shop but also how you shop. Matthew Steen, director of reviews and testing at Choice, advises consumers to be mindful of marketing ploys and consider whether multiple products are necessary when necessary. He also recommends using dishwashing liquid for various cleaning tasks around the home, diluting it as needed.

Moreover, some of the most effective and cheapest cleaning solutions need to be marketed as such. Items like cleaning vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, available at supermarkets and hardware stores, can tackle a range of cleaning tasks at a fraction of the cost of specialised products.

For those interested in eco-friendly options, stores like Scoop and The Source allow customers to refill their bottles with cleaning products. However, these tend to be pricier than supermarket brands.

In response to the purchasing test results, Woolworths, ALDI, the Reject Shop, and Bunnings each highlighted their commitment to providing value to customers, with ALDI affirming its status as Australia's most affordable supermarket.

So, dear members, consider venturing beyond your usual supermarket aisles next time you're stocking up on cleaning supplies. Stores like ALDI and Bunnings offer the savings you need to keep your home and wallet in good shape. And remember, sometimes the best cleaning agent is a bit of elbow grease!
