SDC's 'Throwback Thursday'!

Oh, how time flies! Reminisce your favourite memories with us by posting a special picture of yourself or someone dear to you this Thursday. And if there’s a funny or wholesome story behind it, we’d love to hear it too! I’ll kick things off with this picture of my cousin and I that was taken about 5 years ago.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I had never held a baby in my arms before – and at this moment, I was able to truly grasp what an incredible feeling it is. The best way I can describe it is an intense feeling of love washing over you. My little cousin is a cheery and mischievous toddler now but this memory will forever hold a special place in my heart.

It gives off a nice feeling, eh? That’s nostalgia for you. Whether it’s a photo of your most memorable trip, a beloved childhood toy, or an awkward high school photo, join me by sharing your very own ‘Throwback Thursday’ photo with us in the comments below!

Ok - I'm taking you back to December 1955. We had never heard of water-skiing but my Dad had a little boat and a 15 h.p. motor and he rigged up not just one, but three, flat boards with handles and announced we would go aquaplaning. This first photo shows me, Vernia Bullivant, aged 11 years, my Mum who would've been 33, and our next-door neighbour. We had been learning how to control these boards along the beachfront at Tahunanui (Tahuna) in Nelson, New Zealand and causing quite a stir amongst the holidaymakers. Nobody had seen this sort of activity on the water before. Then I noticed a newspaper cameraman walking along the beach and saw my chance for five minutes of fame. I was just a little bit shy but I went up to him and asked if he would like to go out in our boat and take some photos. He was over the moon. "WOW - would I? That would be amazing". So Dad took him out in the boat, and we three stood there on our aquaplanesDec 1955.jpegDec 1955 2.jpeg

and waved at the camera and I suggested I could go one better and stand on my head. However, the board I was standing on was very narrow and wobbly. So Mum and I swapped boards, I stood on my head, and we made a whole centre-page spread of the newspaper the next day. I was famous - sort of!!!!

Oh dear - you wanted our Australian memories and these photos were taken in N.Z. We moved to Australia to live about ten years later.
Oh, it's totally okay! If it's a special memory to you, that's all that matters to us ❤️❤️ I've never tried water-skiing before. It looks like a lot of fun based on your pictures! :D I can't believe you were able to do a handstand on the board. That's REALLY impressive, @Vernia Bullivangt!

I don’t have any photos, but we lived in Burnley in Richmond.. in the 50’s, about 500 yards from our home was Harding Sauce factory..it was the equivalent of very cheap tomato sauce.. mum was on a low widows pension.. and could only afford this cheap sauce.. when we had collected about 2 dozen empty bottles, it was my job as a 7 year old to return the empty bottles in a shopping trolley and get 2 bottles of sauce in return.. it was embarrassing to say the least, but mum was ecstatic about the free sauce.. I only buy the best sauce now as an adult..

So I wasn't alive just yet but it's one of my favourite family stories. My granddad (Opa) is in this photo - I remember him explaining how he'd saved a man's life once.
The man had struggled his way further and further until he reached a point where the sea floor dropped off. Unable to stand on anything, he started drowning.
My granddad was able to pull him up and out of the water despite the man's thrashing nearly drowning them both.
Did he receive any thanks? Nope, he got a scolding for embarrassing the man.
Luckily, he took it in his stride!

I have a set of twins, paternal girl and boy with my wife(now passed away). My wife had two more sets of twins by previous marriage, one set of identical girls and one set of identical boys. According to the twins club back in 1988, that was an Australasian record, one set of each.
