SDC Member’s Favourite Royal Easter Show Bags
- Replies 2
While Easter has come and gone, we decided to reminisce on our favourite Royal Easter Show Bags in recognition of the current Sydney show.
Do you fancy reading the results and votes of your fellow members?
Here they are!
The favourite was… Cadbury (30.8%)!
In a close second place was the classic Bertie Beetle Show Bag (23.1%).
SunnyBoy, Violet Crumble, Polly Waffle and Arnott’s Potato Chips/Twisties all also received votes!
Now, shall we take a step back into memory lane?
Member @Suzanne rose reminisced:
‘I used to go every year when I was little and even as a teenager. I loved the rides and my favourite was the Large Ferris wheel and the Ghost train both equal. I loved the events in the stadium.’
‘Always got a Kewpie doll on a stick every year and these I had hanging all around my bedroom wall.’
‘Favourite bags were the Bertie bag and Cadbury bag. Favourite food item had to be The Pluto Pup.’
Ah, that brings back memories! She also raised a great point about the cost…
‘But now it's soooo expensive just to get inside the gates costs a lot. It should be at least free to enter. Council makes enough just off the vendors inside.’
Do you agree that entry should be free?
Member @Rosalinda threw her vote into the ring, remembering ‘The licorice bag, filled with various flavours.’ Yum!
While Member @Ricci hasn’t attended any royal shows, she added the one thing she missed: ‘I would have liked to see a woodchop other than on TV. ‘
Meanwhile, Member @Vet543 got something from the show that they didn’t bargain for… ‘I did take my kids to the Canberra Show for a number of years AND what did I get ... Well, the kids got show bags and rides .. while I got the flu again.’ The flu that always goes around at the show is such a nasty one!
Did you know the first ‘show bag’ was filled with coal?
‘It was the earliest sample bag on record, and that piece of coal was worth a lot at the time and many were able to use the coal at home,’ said Tess Shingles, the Queensland museum's acting assistant curator.
‘It must have been a big hit, as the tradition of the show bag has continued to this day.’
Would anyone fancy a bag of coal?
‘Technically the sample bags were the precursor to the show bags and were originally paper bags,’ Ms Shingles said. Sample bags were filled with edible items manufactured locally.
‘The plastic bags came in during the 1970s and at that time they switched to being more commercial and more about pop culture.’

Thank you for having your say! Now, has anyone ACTUALLY won those giant teddy bears? I wonder…
Until next time, dear members!
P.S. Any Sydney members still have until the 17th to attend the Sydney Royal Easter Show and snag their favourite treats!
