- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 1 large egg (for dough)
- 1½ tablespoons grated fresh orange zest
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon water
- 3 tablespoons sliced almonds, roughly broken
- 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar (optional)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cut in Butter: Add cold butter and cut into dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in dried cranberries.
- Prepare Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk sour cream, heavy cream, egg, orange zest, and vanilla extract.
- Combine Mixtures: Gradually add wet ingredients to dry mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
- Shape Dough: Turn onto a floured surface, knead gently, and shape into an 8-inch circle about 1 inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges.
- Prepare for Baking: Place wedges on baking sheet, spacing them apart. Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with almonds and turbinado sugar.
- Bake: Bake for 20–22 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly on a wire rack.
- Optional Glaze: Mix powdered sugar, orange zest, and orange juice. Drizzle over scones before serving.
Notes
- Ensure butter and dairy are cold for flaky texture.
- Avoid overmixing dough to keep scones tender.
- Substitute dried cranberries with fresh or frozen cranberries for a tart flavor.
