Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients:
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ⅔ cup sweetened dried cranberries
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg (for dough)
  • 1½ tablespoons grated fresh orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
For Topping:
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 3 tablespoons sliced almonds, roughly broken
  • 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar (optional)
Optional Orange Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Cut in Butter: Add cold butter and cut into dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in dried cranberries.
  • Prepare Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk sour cream, heavy cream, egg, orange zest, and vanilla extract.
  • Combine Mixtures: Gradually add wet ingredients to dry mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
  • Shape Dough: Turn onto a floured surface, knead gently, and shape into an 8-inch circle about 1 inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges.
  • Prepare for Baking: Place wedges on baking sheet, spacing them apart. Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with almonds and turbinado sugar.
  • Bake: Bake for 20–22 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly on a wire rack.
  • Optional Glaze: Mix powdered sugar, orange zest, and orange juice. Drizzle over scones before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure butter and dairy are cold for flaky texture.
  • Avoid overmixing dough to keep scones tender.
  • Substitute dried cranberries with fresh or frozen cranberries for a tart flavor.
