Score discounts on groceries! How this Coles shopper landed $208 worth of meat for just $53

Supermarket shopping can be overwhelming, with its expansive aisles, numerous products, and rising prices.

However, for savvy bargain hunters, it can become an exciting scavenger hunt rather than a daunting task.

Take, for example, Nessa, a discerning shopper from Victoria, who has honed her skills to such a degree that she recently achieved an incredible feat.

At her local Coles, she successfully acquired an astounding $208 worth of fresh meat for just $53, showcasing her remarkable shopping prowess.

Just how did she manage to pull this off, you ask? Nessa shares her strategy, which aligns with the old adage, 'The early bird gets the worm'.

Making a point of visiting her local supermarket right after the school drop-off around 9:30 am, she was able to nab a cartful of discounted goods.

Her impressive haul included an array of items: kebabs, beef chipolatas, drumsticks, beef sausages, chicken portions and beef patties. And hold onto your hats: she bagged a whole chicken for a mere $4.47.

Nessa's magnificent shopping feat sparked a lively exchange online, eager to replicate her cost-cutting coup.

'Wow! That's awesome!' chimed one, reflecting the general awe and admiration.

Another added, 'Good on you—this is how my family survived years ago when we had three kids, a mortgage, and one income.’

Some asked Nessa if she followed a specific time to hit these special discounts or was this splurge just a result of plain old luck.

Nessa maintained that the markdowns appear somewhat 'randomly', thus discouraging any attempted meticulous planning.

What all supermarket shoppers should realise is that supermarkets, including Coles and Woolworths, do offer these discounts.

Markdowns, such as the one Nessa capitalised on, are generally made on goods about to expire. Times for these can vary, with morning, pre-dinner and just before closing offering potential savings between 10-90 per cent off the regular price.

In another incredible instance of her bargain-shopping prowess, Nessa managed to purchase $100 worth of food for a staggering $13, the haul featuring eight packets of chicken wings for just 80c.

These budget buys are great for prompt storage in the freezer to be used as needed—an essential strategy considering the increasing cost of living, which has Australians tightening their budgets more than ever before.

Key Takeaways
  • A Victorian shopper known as Nessa managed to score $208 worth of groceries, including meat, for only $53 from Coles by shopping early in the morning.

I would suggest the 'fresh' chicken potentially has already been frozen so question if refreezing is a good practice on certain produce unless specifically stated can be frozen.

She's lucky to be getting those bargains. I never see that happening in my local Coles. They only discount by a few cents, hardly worth it. I don't know why, because where my sister lives she always gets the good bargains.

I was very lucky last night at 6pm at my Coles here in Victoria. I got $150.00 !!!!!! worth of meat ........... for all .... $9.50 !!!!!!!! chicken in marinades that were $18, I got for 80 cents ...... I got mince for 20 cents ...... 2 x Pork Roast for 99c ... lamb chops that were $22.00 I got for a dollar. The expiry dates on all of them .. Wednesday and Thursday this week. My trolley was full of meat. It's all in my deep freeze now

Fantastic!!, if you can get all that.
Correct me if l am wrong, but isnt there another discount you can obtain through the supermarkets?
I had heard or read somewhere that if you purchased more than $300 worth of groceries, you could ask for a 10% reduction off all of that? Might want to check with store management but l definitely believe it is available to everyone.

In Victoria they may have the big reductions but at all the Coles Supermarkets in the Newcastle NSW area they are only reducing their products by a few dollars if you are luck some are only 80c etc

While I admire her loyalty to her budget Nessa was a bit greedy in her purchases, did she even think about the pensioners who could have done with some of the meat she bought? GREED! GREED! & even more GREED! If you ask me!

Not so sure it is all GREED GREED GREED. If you happened to be in the right place at the right time, you don't think you might do something similar? I say good for her if she was able to obtain it.
We all look for bargains and purchase as we see fit. If it turns out that it is all gone by the time I were to get there, that's life.

As an 85-year-old who only shops at Aldi I can't see myself ever going to Coles For a start I don't like our local Coles any more than I like their meat which is not enough to spend any money on it!
