It was usually either Vegemite on white bread or peanut butter on white bread and in brown paper bag.

Prefer back in my school days when we had a hot two course meal and a gill of milk everyday served in a dining room

Maybe not a fond memory, but one that will forever stay in my mind: having to sit on the hot asphalt playground (esp. in summer) and having to drink warm, unrefrigerated milk at ‘little lunch’.
