Say it isn’t so! Toblerone is about to look completely different

Brace yourselves, chocolate lovers, because this news might be a little hard to take in. Toblerone, the beloved Swiss chocolate bar, is reportedly about to undergo a major makeover!

If you're a fan of Toblerone, you know that the iconic Matterhorn mountain peak is the centrepiece of the chocolate's packaging. But hold onto your hats, because it looks like that's all about to change.

The US company Mondelez, which makes Toblerone, has decided to move some of its production from Switzerland to Slovakia. And with that change comes a MAJOR shift in Toblerone's appearance.

That's right folks, get ready for a brand-new look! The classic Matterhorn mountain peak that we all know and love might soon be replaced by a more generic summit.

But don't worry, Toblerone's signature shape, with its unique triangular sections, is here to stay.

But why the sudden change?

The reason behind the chocolate's makeover is all thanks to a recent law in Switzerland about 'Swissness'.

The law states that national symbols cannot be used to promote milk-based products that aren't made in the country unless at least 80% of the raw ingredients are of Swiss origin.

Technicalities aside, it means that Toblerone's iconic Matterhorn mountain peak can no longer be used in its current form, as some of the production moves from Switzerland to Slovakia.

But don't worry, Toblerone isn't completely abandoning its Swiss roots.

In fact, the new packaging is set to pay homage to the brand's rich heritage. Mondelez promises a sleek new typeface and branding that will complement Toblerone's archives and the signature of its namesake, Tobler.

The beloved chocolate had its humble beginnings in the Swiss capital, Bern, back in 1908. Since then, Toblerone has maintained a special relationship with the city and its people.

Luckily, Mondelez has confirmed that this won't change anytime soon, providing a glimmer of hope that our beloved bar will still taste just as delicious.

But with the production move to Slovakia, who knows what the future holds for Toblerone? Will it still have the same melt-in-your-mouth goodness that we all know and love?

Only time will tell. In the meantime, let's savour every last bite of the classic Toblerone before it undergoes its dramatic transformation.

Key Takeaways

  • Toblerone is removing the Matterhorn mountain peak from its packaging when some of the chocolate's production is moved from Switzerland to Slovakia.
  • Strict rules have been applied about 'Swissness' which state that national symbols are not allowed to be used to promote milk-based products that are not made exclusively in Switzerland.
  • The new Toblerone branding will include a new typeface and logo drawn from the Toblerone archives and the inclusion of the founder's signature.

But wait, hold on a second, folks, we have another question to address! Now that the iconic Toblerone mountain is reportedly on its way out, what about the bear hiding in plain sight in the logo?

In case you missed it, the Toblerone logo actually features a bear nestled beside the letter 'T'. This bear isn't just a random addition to the design, it's a symbol of the Swiss city of Bern, where Toblerone was created.

The mountain shape of the Toblerone bar was inspired by the Swiss Alps, while the bear was incorporated into the logo as a tribute to the city of Bern and its culture. The bear is featured prominently on the coat of arms of Bern, and it's a beloved symbol of the city.

So, what does this mean for the bear in the Toblerone logo? Well, we don't know for sure yet. But one thing is certain: if the new packaging does away with the iconic mountain peak, then the bear might also be in danger of disappearing from the Toblerone logo.

But let's not get too ahead of ourselves. For now, let's enjoy our Toblerone bars as they are, with both the mountain and the bear gracing the packaging. Because who knows what the future holds for this beloved chocolate bar?
