If you're feeling the squeeze of rising costs, you're definitely not alone! Melbourne dad, Jason Ch'ng managed to reduce his weekly supermarket shop by a staggering $40, adding up to an incredible $2080 in annual savings for his family of four.

Inflation may be hitting hard, but by shopping smart and taking advantage of sales, you can still put delicious meals on the table without going beyond your budget.

From discounted meats to fresh produce, most supermarkets have everything you need to create mouth-watering dishes that you and your family will love.

Ch'ng recommends exploring ALDI's middle aisle, where you can find exciting and unique items beyond just the regular food offerings. Who knows, you might just stumble upon a hidden gem that will add a little extra magic to your meals!

It's not just ALDI that's helping Aussies save on their grocery bills. At Coles, one savvy shopper was able to score an incredible deal on meat. According to her post on social media, the mum was able to buy $140 worth of meat for only $37 by visiting her local Coles store at the right time.

The mum was actually just looking for a snack after work when she decided to pop into her local Coles at Southport Park. It was there that she discovered the marked-down prices on meat at roughly 3:45 PM.

It just goes to show that timing and a little bit of luck can go a long way when it comes to saving on your grocery bill!

Loyalty and rewards programs also help, and one of the most popular among shoppers is Woolworths’ Everyday Rewards, which offers savings opportunities and bonus point deals that you can use in-store and online.

Ch'ng also recommends keeping an eye out for seasonal produce and frozen ingredients, both of which will help keep your weekly spending low.

If you're in the mood for some seafood, Ch'ng suggests choosing from the frozen seafood selection, as it won't compromise on quality. High-quality seafood without the steep price tag? Win-win!

But how do you keep your meals interesting and exciting? Ch'ng suggests choosing a weekly theme, like Mexican or Italian, to add a little fun and creativity to your meal planning.

According to a survey conducted by ALDI, only one in five Australians plan to change their supermarket routine in 2023. For others, it’s not a choice but a necessity.

But here's the good news - ALDI remains firm with the lowest prices every day of the year, making it the perfect destination for Aussie shoppers looking to bank real savings on their grocery bills.

Jordan Lack, Managing Director for ALDI Australia, says the supermarket chain has stayed consistent with its prices despite the ongoing inflation crisis that is impacting supply and stock.

But how much can you really save?

Their Price Report reveals that on average, a shopping basket at ALDI is 24.7% cheaper than at other supermarkets. This means an average Aussie family can save up to $2,468 a year by shopping there!
Key Takeaways

  • Budgeting your weekly supermarket trip is one way to reduce your expenses, but knowing where to shop is also important.
  • ALDI is a great resource for quality groceries that won't cost a fortune.
  • Melbourne father-of-two Jason Ch'ng has found ways to reduce his weekly shopping by up to $40 per week.
  • ALDI's Price Report reveals a shopping basket at ALDI is, on average, 24.7 per cent cheaper than at other supermarkets, meaning an average Aussie family can save $2,468 a year.
Start saving big on your grocery bill today, and consider ALDI for your next shop! But we also understand that it may not be the right choice for everyone.

In a previous article, we explored how an economist compared the prices of ALDI with groceries from Woolies and found that while some items in ALDI were cheaper, not all of them were and the quality often suffered.

According to Jason Murphy, comparing the two supermarkets was a 'nightmare' when accounting for quality and subtle differences. He advised Aussies not to be too 'fussy' when it comes to budgeting and to find the compromise between price and quality.

So, what's the takeaway?

While ALDI may be the ultimate hack for budget-friendly meals during inflation, it's important to weigh the pros and cons of each supermarket and find the right balance between price and quality.

Whether you choose to shop at ALDI or Woolies, or even Coles, keeping an eye on sales, seasonal produce, and items on special, and planning your weekly supermarket trip can help you save big on your grocery bill.

OK. I can dig it that you're giving an enormous plug for Aldi. I like them, too, but "And don't worry, there's no need to sacrifice taste or variety. "?
Fair enough, for most things, on 'taste', but 'variety'? Naaaaah. Aldi's whole schtick is based on the idea of them being the Henry Ford of groceries... "You can have any colour, as long as it's black". There is one brand of just about everything they sell.

I have not purchased much from Aldi, I prefer Coles or Woolies, personal preference, some of their stuff seems cheaper. However I have tasted a few things friends have brought to a party or our bingo night from Aldi's and I have to say the taste of some of the items are not even close to the same thing brought from Coles or Woolies. I love the idea of saving money, don't we all, but I will stick to Coles or Woolies because I find they do have some great specials.

I don't buy from Aldi - they don't have online shopping and they don't have American Express. This is where the biggest difference lies and where their 'savings' don't work for me. Online shopping allows me to see what is on special in the whole store at a glance and only buy from that group of foods, plus I collect points from each of Coles and Woolies Rewards Programs which I can use to discount my purchases through buying gift cards with my points and using them at checkout. With American Express I also get reward points which I can then use as credit on my account - it's win win for me.

It depends on Coles & Woolworths where they are located and the price markdowns. I was up early the other day and decided to head out and get some milk and other items. Coles was marking down some of the meat & chicken on small items that were in sauces and markdown was 50% and use-by date was that day. One, was a chicken and the gas in the package was massive which means it was off.

Another time they marked down some meats $0.50-$2.00 and the original prices were $8-$45. Use-by date was that day or next day. Some were off as well.

It's amazing how much food and good food the stores throw out in the big bins. One chap in Perth has started to collect and takes to pensioners, soup kitchens. The amount of bread in these bins was outrageous. They rather dump it than sell it. I'm guessing that it's a $Tax right-off if thrown in the bin. Apparently, staff put items in plastic bags into these bins and collect later or someone they know does. They have to collect it from the shelves, even fridge/freezers. This way, it's collected and eaten.
