Rural town's mail service shuts down after decades of service. Is your town next?

In the vast and remote landscapes of Australia, the local post office is more than just a place to send and receive mail.

These offices serve as a lifeline to the outside world, a community hub and a symbol of connection.

Yet, residents of one rural town might have to say goodbye to one of their long-standing post offices soon.

Burketown, a small town nestled in Queensland's Gulf of Carpentaria, is under threat as its sole post office could shut down soon.

The Burketown post office was scheduled for closure by the end of February.

The closure came after the retirement of the town's long-serving postmistress, Joy Arnold.

Ms Arnold has been the heart and soul of the local postal service since 1981.

After 43 years of operations and no postmasters willing to take over her responsibilities, Ms Arnold is ready to retire.

Ms Arnold's retirement effectively left the town's 200 residents with a daunting reality.

Without Burketown's post office, locals could face a six-hour round trip for simply collecting their mail from neighbouring communities like Doomadgee or Normanton.

Primary school teacher Emma Jensen highlighted the gravity of the situation.

Originally from Gympie, she understood the importance of mail services in remote areas.

'Anything that the town doesn't offer, we have to get in via mail,' Ms Jensen shared, as she often buys school and home essentials through online shopping.

'If we can't get access to mail, that makes us even more isolated than what we already are,' she said.

Burke Shire Mayor Ernie Camp acknowledged the significance of the postal service and the loss it could bring.

'Adding something else to the shire's core business would just be another burden,' Mayor Camp shared.

'D-day is here, and I'm calling on Australia Post to help us.'

'I don't expect them to take the full burden, but what incentives can they give as far as keeping Australia Post as a brand name in rural Australia?' Mayor Camp asked.

An Australia Post spokesperson responded to the town's situation.

'After many years of dedicated service the Licensee at Burketown is moving to retirement after making the decision to hand back her licence. Her last day at the Post Office will be 28 February,' the spokesperson stated.

'We are working with Burke Shire Council on a solution to maintain postal services in Burketown.'

'Australia Post thanks the community for their patience and understanding and will keep our Burketown customers updated around next steps,' the statement ended.

The community continues to hope for a solution that could keep them connected to the rest of the country.

As we consider the future of postal services in Australia, it's time to recognise the role they play in rural communities.

I thought originally that the postal services shut down this store but if nobody is willing to work there it's not going to stay open.
The lady running it is a licensee - she would have purchased the licence from Aust Post in the day.
Unless someone will buy that licence from her it will have to close - I don't think someone will be employed by Aust Post to run it - there is much more than just postal there is banking etc and they have to be trained as well.

We live in Yarrabilba Qld, and have tried to get a post office for several years. It's 20 mins drive to Jimboomba or 30 mins to Browns Plains
The local pharmacy has offered to allow parcels to be sent and dropped off.
We're a growing town with approximately 13,000 residents.
We have a PO in my area - approx 15 mins away - we have rural delivery 2 days per week - the licensee decided 2 years ago not to deliver mail to us because he didn't like our new letter box as he couldn't put the mail in without getting out of his vehicle. Now the way they deliver mail in the urban scene is fine but in rural areas not always possible - and it isn't for approx 10 boxes on our road - he has to get out and off his butt! Our box met Aust Post criteria and was positioned at our gateway to the property as deemed - so we had to get a PO Box at another town 40 klms away to get mail and parcels!
Perhaps someone in your area could put their hand up to be an agency for Aust Post - there are a lot of them in rural QLD where an existing store or similar are an agent - something to investigate?

It must be really hard to live in remote areas when essential services keep closing down. I’m fortunate to live in a small city with access to post offices, banks and medical facilities but not everyone can or wants to live amongst a lot of people. I would find it hard without my daily Aus Post parcel delivery service. I especially feel concern for those who are my age or older having to travel great distances to collect mail, shop and do their banking. its sad that people are often forced to move due to a lack of services. If only there was an easy solution but I very much doubt it.

Why doesn't your local PO have storage facilities for parcels??.....in order to save having to travel 40 klms each way to collect your Australia Post letters and parcels ???

2 words - disability access! As well they do not have Parcel Collect which we have at our current PO - we go to a major centre 20 mins past fortnightly for groceries, doctors etc and clear our box and pick up.
To be honest I wouldn't give him the time of day after the rubbish he puts people thru - he is a pig of a man.
