Rural Migration Hits Five-Year Peak, Proclaimed as the 'best decision'!

If you've ever given serious thought to trading in the hustle and bustle of city life for the more serene offerings of the countryside, you're not alone! Rural migration has reached a five-year high, and many Australians are making the life-changing decision for various reasons. Interestingly, this noticeable shift isn't entirely down to the pandemic.

Vanessa, a former city resident who moved to greener pastures, can vouch for the many benefits the countryside can provide. She claims that leaving the city behind was the 'best decision' she ever made. Not only did it offer her a healthier lifestyle, but it also significantly improved her quality of life.

More and more Australians are discovering this fact as rural migration rates skyrocket to levels not seen in half a decade. The trend shows no signs of slowing down, and many reasons contribute to this mass exodus from urban locales. Cheaper housing, friendly communities, lack of traffic, clean air, and safer environments are some reasons Australians look to the countryside to call home.

The initial assumption is that the pandemic inspired this rural migration, but there's a lot more to it. While the social distancing and lockdowns undoubtedly shone a light on the benefits of country living, many Australians have had enough of the high-pressure, fast-paced city life, favouring the tranquillity of rural areas for the long term.

Reap the Rewarding Benefits of Living in the Countryside

  • Improved quality of life: Rural migration can significantly enhance one's quality of life, providing a healthier lifestyle and a closer connection with nature.
  • Serenity and peace: The lack of traffic congestion and a safer environment in rural areas offer a welcome respite from the busy city life, allowing seniors to enjoy their golden years in tranquillity.
  • Career flexibility: With remote work becoming more prevalent, moving to the countryside enables professionals to maintain their careers while enjoying the rural setting.
  • Mental and emotional well-being: The slower-paced and connected lifestyle of rural areas can have profound positive effects on mental and emotional health, enhancing the overall quality of life.
  • Affordability and beautiful landscapes: Rural properties are often more affordable, and the natural beauty of the countryside add to the appeal of rural relocations.
  • Increasing rural migration rates: The sentiments of individuals like Vanessa are widely shared, leading to a surge in rural migration rates.
  • Potential for the best decision: Those considering a rural relocation may find themselves echoing the sentiment of making the ‘best decision’ they ever made.

Ultimately, transitioning to the countryside offers an opportunity to enjoy the rewards of a peaceful and serene environment, making it a potentially life-changing and fulfilling decision.

My husband and I moved from suburban Victoria to a rural property in East Gippsland 14 years ago and it was most definitely the best move we've ever made. It's so peaceful, the native birdlife and other native animals like echidna, wombats, kangaroos and wild ducks as well as deer and unfortunately, foxes, abound and are often seen on our property. We have a wombat who has set up home in our machinery shed and has been there for about 5 years now, he has a huge burrow but it doesn't interfere with anything so he's just fine where he is. The people in country towns are just so very friendly, strangers will talk to you or just say hello as you walk down the street, the checkout operators greet you like a long lost friend at the supermarket. It's definitely not like living in suburbia where nobody would consider acknowledging a stranger if you pass them in the street in fear of being mugged, country towns and their residents are warm and welcoming and we've made many wonderful friends here, I wouldn't swap my lifestyle for anything on this earth.

Totally agree with everything you said.
We moved to the.country two years ago, best move we ever made.
Bought a 4x2 brick house on a 1/4 acre block for $,160,000. It was stuck in the 70',s but a good solid home.
We got stuck into the renos, husband put up a large deck and pergola and built on a bootroom,.while I painted the exterior and interior of the house and installed a new kitchen. A new modern interior design throughout, established new gardens and we now have a lovely modern home with the large livable rooms of that era,.not the dog box size bedrooms of today's homes.
We had enough money over for a.comforrable bank balance and we also purchased a smaller 3x1 which we tidied up a bit and now use that as a rental.
As I said, best move we ever made, both financially and lifestyle.

We live rural, have done since 2017 when we were both made redundant. When we watch the news now we thank heaven we no longer live in the suburbs. We hate having to go anywhere near the suburbs now. So much traffic and noise!

Yes medical problems aside, it is good to move away from the hustle and bustle. I didn't realise you get a $250 regional allowance. Sadly, even in the three years we have been here, house density is catching up, so many developments have been earmarked. Yet no increase in shops, hospitals, doctors etc.
