Reinvention isn’t easy, especially when the past refuses to stay buried.
For one of Australia’s most iconic rockers, redemption has been a years-long journey of struggle, reflection, and change.
His latest announcement has fans buzzing, promising a year filled with live performances and creative projects that go beyond the stage.
Fresh out of hip surgery, Jimmy Barnes refused to let health setbacks slow him down, unveiling plans for a national tour and hinting at a new project alongside his wife, Jane.
The 68-year-old rock legend had only just returned home from hospital when he began sharing updates on social media, including his excitement about getting back to home-cooked meals.
‘I get to enjoy my dinners at home now; it’s hard to have an appetite in hospital post-surgery,’ he wrote, posting a photo of himself at a table with a manuscript.
The manuscript’s title, Seasons on The River Bend Recipes, suggested another cookbook could be in the works.
It would follow Where the River Bends: Recipes and Stories from the Table of Jane and Jimmy Barnes, which was released in 2021.
He said: ‘Jane and I are working on an exciting new project that we’ll tell you about as it takes shape...It’s going to be a busy year. Bring it on.’
Barnes had long embraced a healthier lifestyle, often posting about meals Jane prepared using fresh produce from their garden.
His love for cooking and family life also extended into his music.
‘Beyond The Riverbend’—a track from his upcoming album—took inspiration from their Southern Highlands home.
That same album, Defiant, was set for release on 6 June, with Barnes announcing a six-city tour to promote it.
The Defiant Tour would see him performing with a nine-piece band in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra throughout June.
Fans on the Gold Coast would also get a special treat, as Barnes had just added a one-off soul performance at Blues on Broadbeach on 18 May.
It had been a tough few years for the Cold Chisel frontman.
He previously cancelled his 2022 summer tour for urgent back and hip surgery before being hospitalised in late 2024 with pneumonia that led to open-heart surgery.
His latest recovery update sparked an outpouring of support, with hundreds of fans cheering him on.
‘Oh Jimmy, you are a true champion; home good food is the best; your persistence and determination is paying off,’ wrote Donna Maree Symonds.
‘Hospital food is passable but there is nothing like home cooking and from your previous posts, Jane’s cooking looks delicious,’ posted Julie Bassett.
‘You are looking great and Jane looks like you aren’t getting spoilt [with] home cooked meals,’ added Jodie Anne.
Barnes had nothing but gratitude for those who helped him get back on his feet.
‘I can’t tell you how great it is to be home, to sleep in my own bed,’ he shared.
‘Thank you to the medical teams at St Vincent’s and St Luke’s hospitals who have got me back on my own two feet. My Jane who’s been by my side the entire time. You guys cheering me on.’
Tickets for the Defiant Tour would go on sale from 10am local time on 28 February via official ticketing sites.
Here’s the Schedule for the Defiant Tour:
With a new album and tour on the horizon, Jimmy Barnes is showing us all that nothing can keep him down.
