Riding in the trailer

Today’s ‘Yesterday’s Australia’ segment brings us back to the days of riding the trailers and leaping into the back of a ute en route to the beach. No seat belts in sight; just the wind in your hair and laughter in the air. Ah, those were the days of wild adventures and heart-pounding excitement! Do you have any fun memories of riding in a trailer? Tell us here.

The kid that sat next to me in school "6th class" was thrown out of the back of a truck and killed, when it hit a bump on the road on the way to football Saturday morning!

Dad would go to the tip and the street kids and I would wait at the top of our street for him to come home and we would all pile joyfully in so he could drive down the road to our house. It was the highlight of our sundays. Some sundays he would actually drive all the way to the bottom of the street and then drive back so the other kids could wave to their folks. Gentle old time fun :)

No my grandfather always said it was too dangerous, I think it was more country folk who did this . we were however piled into the station wagon and aloud to sit at the back with the top half of the back opened

In the 1960's the Salvation Army band used to drive around all the suburbs in Perth a few evenings before Xmas on the back of a Holden ute playing Xmas carols, while foot patrols would go door knocking for donations. Was that done in other cities?

We used to ride around in a trailer behind the car or when we moved to a farm the tractor. We would throw out hay to the cows from the trailer. Hay rides were the go at all our country towns parades once as well. When we were little our dad had a sporty car for awhile, it only had a front seat and a boot type area that the cover folded up on. We often rode to our country school in it if dad was home from his job away at the mill. 5/6 kids piled in the back part and we sang “ little piggies going to market to get their heads chopped off” all the way to school. It was such fun. Gravel roads, hardly any cars on the road as out in the sticks so we all survived our escapades.
